Well the time has come again for our next pup and my wife and kids are fighting hard to add a Dalmatian to the family.

As a family we are very active. Our kids are 10 and 7. We live in Florida and spend a lot of time out in Montana. We have an 8 year old mini Goldendoodle (~25 lbs).

Anybody have experience with the breed? Would appreciate any guidance or things to look out for? We've done a ton of research and spoken to about a dozen breeders but I'm always wary of them telling us what we want to hear.

Thanks in advance!

I had two. Both females. Pretty hi energy. Can be possessive. Need to have pigment around eyes.

No experience myself but heard others.. They are high energy and stubborn, a little more difficult to train. Get a harlequin Great Dane. People will think it's a very large Dalmatian, like ours.

Alwyas heard from my mom that they were one of the more aggresively protective dogs which makes then very tough for families w children. Her clinic had a ton abandonded when 101 dal was popular. Usually a month or a couple weeks after Christmas and Valentines day.

My friend had one growing up. She was sweet but pretty dumb. We could get her to start chasing her own tail and she'd spin around in circles for what seemed like 10 straight minutes. She fell into the pool one time while chasing her tail.

Make sure the parents have the proper health clearances for the breed. Check ofa.org to see what is the minimum and recommended testing for Dalmatians. Also, make sure that the breeder does the genetic testing for deafness. A good breeder will even get the BAER testing done before placements.

My experience with this breed is very spotty.

Dumbest breed of dog I've ever been around.

You couldn't run fast enough to give me one.

That's just my experience.

Very difficult to own.

There's a reason they aren't more popular.

Incredibly destructive breed. Needs to be outside only. Not particularly bright.

I've know two different people with Dalmatians and both had a bad experience.

My daughter always wanted a Dalmatian. Finally got one and 'gifted' it to my Ex when she went off to college. He was a very good dog, and got along great with another dog she adopted from another daughter, a French bulldog. At the age of four, out of nowhere, the dog gets very sick, from some sort of neurological issue that happens in Dalmatians. She ended up putting it down, which really devastated everyone given he was only 4.

My roommate had one in college. Hated that damn thing. All three roommates had agreed that there would be no dogs allowed in the living room on the furniture. Of course, all of the furniture was mine.

I would come home to that damn dog laying on my couch grinning.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

I got a male when I was a Jr in high school and loved that damn dog more than life itself. He rode everywhere with me in front seat. He went through 2 years of college with me, and he passed at 14 and I buried him here on our land. He was a great dog, friendly, stubborn, but knew his place in the pecking order. He only snapped at a kid once when one ran up and got right in his face. He'd never been around kids before and I am pretty sure it scared him. I'd love to have another but I know I'll never find one like him. We combined the sire and dams name to name him- Sir Hickory's Chipper. Went by Chipper. Miss him 20yrs later.

My sister in law had one years ago. That dog was SUPER protective (aggressive) of her to the point that I would not let my kids around it. Personally, I would not own one.

Our neighbors had one that I had to feed if they were out of town because it would be super aggressive with anyone else. It ultimately severely bit the husband in the stomach one day and they put her down. No autopsy but their vet speculated it may have had some type of schizophrenia related condition.

I have had two. As others have said, loveable, sweet, and dumb. I loved them both so damn much because of it. The second one was my constant companion when we transitioned to work from home and was right up until we had to put him down.

He developed very bad hips and went downhill literally overnight. His suffering and trying to drag himself up to me destroyed me inside while trying to arrange for a vet to come in on a holiday weekend. Thank you Dr. Clader in Jourdanton, I will forever be in your debt for how you cared for Chase and me during that time.

He was a rescue out of a place in Austin that specializes in Dals. Damn it, crying thinking about him and he has been gone for 3 years. Make sure you take care of their hips if you get one.

If you are in the Dallas area here is a rescue:

LImited experience, but bad. My sister-in-law's sister had one that was super aggressive. Dog was inside while we were outside chiling during a cookout, I looked at it through the glass door and it damn near came through the glass at me Cujo style. A few months later it attacked my neice and almost took her ear off.

No thanks. That was enough for me to put dalmations on the "never" list for my family.

The only dog that has ever truly attacked and bitten me was a dalmatian, so I don't have anything positive to add.

Old roommate had one.

Harsh reality is if you are shopping for a dog with certain qualities there are many better breeds out there.

No direct experience here, but…

My Wife is uneasy around dogs to this day because she was attacked by a Dalmatian when she was 9. It bit her in the stomach and the pinned her down and bit her in the face. The adults had to come peel the dog off of her.

We have never had Dalmatians but my aunt had many of them while I was a kid growing up till I was in my 40's. We played and rough housed a lot with them as a kid and never saw any aggression.
They are high energy but so is a hot bred hunting dog typically.
Search for a breeder that is not a year around "puppy mill" and ask to see proof of health of the dame and sire and check for past health problems like bad hips, knees, eyes, temperament etc.

We adopted a 9 month old Dal from a county shelter years ago. I knew a fair amount about them as a co-worker was heavily involved with a Dal rescue organization. Yes, high energy so I took her to training which helped tremendously plus we crate trained her. Lucy was a great dog. Friendly to all, loved to run, pull the kids on the sled, hunt critters in the back yard and then just lounge in her crate, at your feet or on her bed in front of the tv.

They do shed a ton and the hair works it's way into certain fabrics such that you have to pick it out bit by bit.

Dalmation's are notorious biters, on the same level as a chow chow. Never understood how these dogs were always shown on a firetruck looking like a super nice and friendly dog. I have yet to come into contact with a nice one. Seen more pit bulls that could be petted.

Our neighbor growing up was a fire chief that owned a token Dalmatian. That dog was a straight a**hole.

I guess I was lucky with my two Dals. They were like any other puppy with the destructive stuff they did, but they were very peaceful, loveable, dogs that would not harm a fly. Sorry for some of your horror stories with them.

I find our Aussie's to be much more buttholes than the Dals ever were. If one of the Aussies bites me again, he is a dead man walking, or the Pyr will kill him. Either way he is gone.
