We are looking to move to Troup, Texas to be closer to daughter and grandkids. Any comments from those who live in or around that area and what the deer hunting is like would be appreciated! We were looking at Palestine, Texas but thought the Troup area would be an upgrade for medical needs.
Thanks!

Yep, it's east Texas. They actually live in Grapeland which is 1.5 hrs to the south but it's better than the 6 hrs from my current place. We seriously considered BCS but the land cost and taxes are much higher. Looked at several houses there.

Lots of pretty land south of Troup and east of Jacksonville and Rusk. Price is reasonable compared to south Tyler land. But you're isolated somewhat. But easy reach to Grapeland. Real pretty stuff in between Frankston and Palestine- but you get too far east, you compete with gentlemen metroplex farmers. Look at southern Hendrson, northern Anderson. Good luck! That being said, Troup is great town- lots of Ags.

I like Troup. Very quick drive to Tyler which is a good place to find most of your needs. Pretty fair medical treatment available there too. You will be about 70 minutes away from Grapeland with an easy drive and light trafic most of the time. As far as hunting, I live in Henderson which is about 25 minutes east of Troup and have hunted on a property just north of Troup for several years. Quite a few good deer, can still find a few ducks but this has declined over the past 10 years (like every where in East Texas), occasionally there are huntible numbers of dove but usually not so good, and feral hogs if you like that. I think there are lots worse places to live. Troup itself does not have much in terms of shopping, restaurants, etc. but is close enough to Tyler which has enough, at least for me.

And if you get sick, you can eat some of that Troup clay!

We played them in coach pitch in the State Championships. Probably quarterfinals. This is 2020 when sooooooo many leagues didn't make.

Anyway they brought 200 fans to Belton. Easy. My son still remembers every single play of that game. It was the best youth league environment I have ever witnessed. Totally healthy. Everyone cheering for all of the kids. Constant noise and chants and cheers. My favorite night in youth baseball.

I always go for Troup.

Thanks for all the replies! How about a good church? We go to a baptist church right now but are looking for a good Bible believing conservative church.

Didn't go through Troup but I drove from Tyler down to Livingston this evening and it was beautiful country. I know it's still East Texas but it would beat the hell out of living in the metroplex.

The movie Bernie is a classic dark movie about true events. Jack Black was great in it!

We live towards Arp. Kids live in South Tyler. On a good day it takes 30 minutes to get to their place.so country commutes, while longer, may seem not so bad.
Troup has good size Baptist church. Out on 344, there is Mt Carmel that is big church for such a small community. Central In Jacksonville is big, ditto Flint. Lots of folks drive in to Green Acres in Tyler, a mega church.

Troup is a great little town. I would not hesitate to move there. LOTS of churches to choose from within a 20 - 30 minute drive. Pretty decent hunting out here in Northern East Texas. If you can't find a church in Troup, Whitehouse is just right down the road. You also have some good choices in far South Tyler outside the outer toll road as well as Flint. We are at Southspring Baptist Church out on Hwy 69 S and love it there. Lots of great folks and very good preaching pastor.

You could also look at Nacogdoches area - prob a little closer to Grapeland and if you want to be a little further out, Hwy 7 between Nac and Center is some of the prettiest rolling hills in east Texas. Good deer hunting and close to Rayburn and the Angelina/ Davy Crockett national forest in either direction.

I grew up in Frankston. Troup was our biggest rival and we hated them. But I don't know much about the town now days. I'm sure it is a great place.

You should consider looking at Bullard and the areas around Bullard/Flint/Noonday. Not any closer or farther from Grapeland. I would check out places east of Lake Palestine and west of Hwy 69 (nice), north to Flint, south to Hwy 175.

Palestine is a great town and has good medical care. My wife's best friend since college is from there and moved back after graduating from A&M.

Elkhart is another place to consider.

If medical needs are a concern, you'll want to find out how long it will take an ambulance to get to your home and then get you to a hospital. This is a concern of my mom, as my parents live 10 miles out in the country from a small central Texas town. The nearest hospital is about 30 miles away. So, if an ambulance is needed, it's, at minimum, 45 minutes before they are at a hospital. Could be 10+ minutes before the ambulance arrives.

If it is just access to quality doctors, then it's a matter of how far you want to drive. But generally, Tyler will have the better options for doctors.
