My brother was fishing at broken bow in Oklahoma and caught a yellow ish orange rainbow? I mean super bright, but otherwise in every way a rainbow trout. Special variety?
It is a color phase of Rainbow trout caused by a recessive amelanistic gene called the "Emerson Strain. Most of the Rainbows at Broken Bow are provided by Crystal Lake Fisheries near Ava, MO. It is owned by the Emerson family and their dad bred a few yellow trout he noticed in their stock until he had developed a unique line of bright yellow trout. When I guided at Broken Bow we called them "Judas Trout" because they told people where the other trout were hanging out.
They are stockers called Palomino. All over certain rivers in Colorado. Nothing natural or native about them but they look cool. Don't last long if you have eagles or large raptors on whatever river they inhabit - they stand out like a sore thumb.
If not mistaken they also have golden trout at broken bow. They look like swimming bananas. Don't have the red streak… or maybe the locals just called them golden trout and they are the yellow rainbows but I caught several without the red streak.
This trout looked like the picture posted above but with a very faded barely pink lateral stripe instead of the usual reddish. No doubt at all it was a rainbow from the body shape, color pattern, etc.
