Went to the Starship launch this week. Sunday we drove down Hwy 80 and came back today. I couldn't get a picture but there was some road kill just north of Helena that I can't figure out what it was.

Top had a long dark brown fur with a golden/honey colored belly. It had a leg stuck in the air on Sunday and the leg/paw were thick all the way down. It didn't have the tapered slender leg of a deer.

I got a good look at a badger in the Panhandle back in the summer. This wasn't a badger based on that experience. The color was all wrong and this was a bigger animal. My first thought was a small black bear. But I don't think so based on the lighter colored belly fur. Ideas?

This is hilarious.

I also think it was a pig. They have all kinds of color variations.

Pig seemed like the obvious choice at first but it had extremely thick shaggy fur for a pig.

Yeah, feral hogs come in all shapes and sizes. Most likely a feral hog.

And, yes, my name does check out.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

I can promise you there are no black bears around Helena …. Paul the local hunter over there would have taken it out long ago… hes been shooting every wild animal that lives and walks in that area for years. Plus if black bear were around there ot would be all over the local Facebook pages…

My guess would be a domesticated wild hog, they are all over that area? Possibly a small baby calve got out and smashed by one of the oil trucks ? Or even a big stray dog.. they like Helena for some reason

I saw road kill along I10 that looked like a badger. I didn't stop to confirm though. Could that be a possibility?

I got a real good look at a road killed badger on 87 north of Amarillo back in July. This wasn't a badger.

Could it have been an otter or beaver? Did you notice a tail?

Had that chocolate color but didn't look like either of those I've ever seen. I'm starting to think it was a large dog based on the fluffy coat.
