Trying to find an option that might work for my nephew. He's 9, and doesn't like pump shotguns. He wants a semi-auto.

Thoughts?
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Coming at you with a classic OB reply. non-answer to your question and a rec you didn't ask for:

it's hard as hell to hit a bird with a .410. I suggest you get the kid a small 20ga and let him grow into it.

Yeah, that ain't happening. This is for turkey hunting I believe. I know they don't do dove hunting.

at 9 I think he should be happy to shoot whatever you allow him to

I grew up with a Mossberg 183 bolt action .410.

My son also grew up shooting one. Shot his first few birds with it.

I know Remington made it maybe makes an 1100 in 410 because maybe 20 years ago I put like 20 raffle tickets in the bucket for one at a Houston DU banquet. Didn't win. It was pretty cool and unique looking.

My first at that age was a hand me down SxS that's since been lost or loaned out by my dad.

Maybe an OU would do the trick??

At least get a 28. I have a youth model 1100 in 20. Very low recoil.

short people with semi's can lead to unintentional loaded barrel sweeps as they tend lose track of shells in magazine. may consider a full mag plug until you have confidence that there's no chambered barrel sweeps. Good luck and be safe!

I started with g-ma's H&R single shot .410. I did take birds, albeit not that many.

Then I graduated to a single shot .20g. Got better. You have to make that first shot count.

Then it was the Winchester Model 12 .16g pump with a poly-choke.

I didn't graduate to a semi until after college. 80's model Browning B80, .20g that I still have and use.

Only one I know of (that's new)is the Tri-star at academy. I have no idea as to the quality or reliability. An old model 1100 is probably the standard, but those are getting harder and harder to find. I think Mossberg may have made one too.

So he doesn't like pumps...how does he feel about over/under? I have a yildiz .410 over under and I love it. Lightweight, lots of choke availability, and it's been very reliable.

Well, my BIL wants me to talk him into a pump. I have an old pistol grip .410 - I may try to find a youth stock to put on it to show him that would be better.

Of course he usually goes along with whatever I say. His parents parent him a particular way; I give him options but don't let him get away with anything.

He likes hanging out with me.

Talk him into a 20. Daly 601 youth 20 is soft shooting, has the shortest lop of any shotgun I could find, has dovetail for a red dot, and is like $350. Also the only 410 shells he should be shooting at a turkey are tss and they're $8 each.

Money is no object to his dad. He has a multi million dollar company.

I'm sure somebody makes one but I've never seen a .410 semiautomatic.

8 year old me got one of these for Christmas. Mine was a Revelation brand which was made for western auto by mossberg iirc. It has killed many dove, ducks, and all kinds of other birds and animals. A .410 with 3" lead 4 shot will Absolutely kill a turkey, ducks, etc.
My son shot it for several years before getting a 20 gauge. And numerous kids have used it on their first year of hunts, including this year. It stays at our hunting cabin and is used every year. I'll try to weigh it soon and update this post with a photo.

I never liked single barreled hammer guns for kids starting out but imo this bolt action is perfect.

Then for sure a Ceasar Guarinni or Krieghoff 12 ga exhibition grade over under with custom tubes. Only clear choice.

Mossberg makes a .410 and 28 gauge semi auto. A coworker just bought the 28 gauge and really likes it. Says it has almost no recoil. He got it because of some shoulder/neck issues.

First shotgun I ever hunted with was a single shot .410. Used it for 2 seasons and never hit a dove. I know your nephew is turkey hunting which is different than wing shooting, but those .410's are tough esspecially for someone just starting out. I'd throw a 28 gauge in the discussion.

I think tri star makes a .410 semi auto, but don"t know much about it.
