You would think after 18 year in the pawn industry that I would have a lock down on a good place to take scrap gold and silver. However that was 8 years ago now and our local place is gone and I am not going out of State to the other one we used to use.

I have quite a bit of old sterling silverware. Lots of it. I am going to keep one nice set but want to scrap the rest. It is north of 25 pounds worth.

In other words I am going to do my kids a favor and turn a closet full of spoons and forks into gold coins.

Anyone have any suggestions? I would have no problem driving a few hours each way for the right place.

Thanks

My 101 year old grandmother just passed and had a completely unused full set of silver silverware she got potentially when she got married in the 40s, does it have value beyond that of "scrap silver"?

Central Refining in Dallas is where we've gone for 15 years. Just FYI everyone is very slow on silver right now. Some are even passing on it. Just melted two days ago and they had a note on the door regarding silver being very slow.

Potentially. A lot depends on the maker and design, not suprisingly. Helped my Mom research some my grandmother had. It wasn't rare or especially valuable. She wasn't looking to sell it, just curious what it was worth. Turns out not worth much and many people had the same silverware for sale online.

I'm curious what a mid 80s gold high school ring is worth today- melt value.
Men's, Balfour and I believe 10 carat. I never wore it after high school and doubt heirs would want it one day.
Wife has hers also.

It is not worth what yall think it is worth

First 25 pounds will be just a guess 8 pounds still alot of silver But It is also alot of work to smelt silver and seperate the silver from the stainless steel

But good luck with it and I hope your happy with your final price

Yeah it reads Balfour 10k inside just like my Aggie ring. But it's not as heavy as the Aggie ring.

Yea I know that. I was already discounting the stainless poundage. We used to deal with that on occasion in the pawn shops.

I mean I have a lot of it. It's been passed down in my family for literally 170 years. I'm turning it into gold coins.

I sold mine last weekend and it got me almost 650 and I don't have beefy fingers.

I have a set of gold teeth fillings from an unknown dead relative that was in my Dads stuff after he passed. Need to go sell that also.

So who took the gold fillings out of his teeth after he died? Didn't know that was a thing and glad mine aren't gold.

All depends on weight. I'm guessing it weighs 20 grams if it's not aa heavy as your Aggie ring. That's $1100 in scrap value. Or ~$55/gram. Now the trick is getting as close to scrap as you can. The dealer has to make money too.

I wish I was smart enough to open a pawn shop but I bet there is so many headaches that no one sees

Holding merchandise for 90 days or whatever the term is seems like a big time headache

Yall are so educated on every item that just seems like a wealth of knowledge and reading is needed all the time

It was fun and lucrative. But at the end of the day it is retail and brings all the retail headaches with it. You do learn a lot about random stuff.

One big misconception is it's not a buy/sell game. It's a loan money/have original customer pick up stuff game. Pawnshops make money off of service charges. The last thing they want to do, generally speaking, is sell stuff.

Most people on here would be really surprised at how many people out there need to borrow a couple of dollars until payday.

I'm curious how they did things before the internet. Now it is relatively easy to google the value of stuff and throw out the garbage prices on ebay.

We would get the Sunday newspapers with all of the adds. That and catalogs.

It's a hell of a lot easier now. For both buyers and the pawn shops.

We were bought out and all laid off. It was a good day and a bad day. Severances are nice, but getting laid off at 38 is not.

There used to be three publicly traded companies that owned a very large share of the overall pawn balance in the US. I don't remember exactly how much but the majority in most States including Texas.

There are now two. I was with the one that got bought.

I lived all over the country managing acquisitions and what not. After we got bought wife wanted to move to the country(sort of). So time to do something else.

My initial thought was the coincidence in timing of this post and the recent Louvre robbery.

Louvre Robbery

I read an article about this the other day. Seems thieves like the old diamonds due to no laser engraved IDs, but the metals are likely lower quality that what you would buy today.

My late dad told me when he was a kid he went with his father to a friend's house who was in the pawnshop biz.

He noticed the "bricks" keeping the doors open and found out they were solid gold that had tarnished. (After googling, they must not have been pure gold but rather a mix of metals).

The man said no one would ever think to steal them. Cool story I know, but was interesting to me as a boy.
I don't think you know me.
