Anyone on here dabble in precision gas gun competition stuff?

While there are some admin type things I would change if I were in charge, the overall premise of the competition has been super fun and pushed me way outside of my normal comfort zone.

I wont make the Finale in December, but I will be at the next match at Gravestone near Lipan on November 2nd (yes, I am skipping out on part of opening rifle weekend, its just that fun).

Thanks for posting. What setup are you using?

I had been shooting in 18 inch criterion core barrel for the majority of this year. But it really started giving me some issues that I may or may not post on here because I really don't want it to come across as me blasting the company or the product. Because I was really happy with it, until I wasn't.

As far as the rest of the components of how it was set up, it had a BCM gas block, a BCM MCMR hand guard, BCM upper, BCM bolt and carrier, VLTR A5H2 buffer, UBR stock, on a Larue lower with a Larue MBT 2 stage. I bounced back and forth using a rearden brake and tossing an otter creek polonium on it. All that was topped off with a NF NX8 2.5-20x50 in an old larue mount.

However, I have abandoned the lighter weight barrel and have moved to the opposite end of the spectrum with an 18" SPR barrel from SOLGW. The weight alone made me look for stiffer upper receivers. It just so happens that SOLGW makes a stiffened upper called the broad sword that pairs well with their hand guard. So I have swapped uppers and hand guards now. Also, sometime before making the barrel switch, I stole an LWRC lower off of a different rifle of mine, and ditched the larue, chasing after the Ambi bolt release.

I've also now embraced the fact that this is a competition rifle and should be treated as such, and put a Chad light break on the end. Now I'll be one of the heathens at the match.

Oh, and it's heavy at 12 lbs 13.6oz

But it's also very flat now.

I haven't yet shot the SOLGW setup in a match yet. But it's promising in the practice runs I've done. I'll know more this Sunday as I plan to put a decent amount of rounds down it mixed with some positional shooting to make sure I have everything where I want it ahead of the gravestone match.

For reference, the last match at gravestone had these target distances and frequency:

I have a ton of fun doing it.

Love it.

I don't have time to add another competition to my agenda but this look like a fun one.

ive done a terrible job of getting film on these things.
my goal next match is to better video document the stages and setups.

the match at gravestone (vs one out in brownwood texas vs one at battle springs ranch) has had some of the most unique props.

one stage was a truck bed from an f-250. stage had you firing from the bed rail as if you were standing beside the truck then climbing in the bed and firing off the bed rail.

another was from three positions off a flat bed boat that was loaded on a trailer.

another was starting from a firing position out the top of the emergency roof escape of an old school bus, then dropping down and firing out a window.

and probably my fav, was firing from the back seat of an old helicopter shell using a strap across the door as the shooting position.

of course you have the fence panels, the railroad ties, barrels, piles of large rocks, and huge tractor tires stages. but some of those prop type stages are just flat fun.

one other neat thing that has been recently introduced is moving targets. I wish i would have videoed my reshoot of this stage (i was trying to beat the storm not knowing if they would cancel the whole match or just postpone). this was a 3mph back and forth mover at 497 yards. i ended up hitting it during the reshoot after the storm 9 out of the possible 12 hits (using 17 rounds (there is always 5 extra rounds allowed per stage)).

you can definitely see why they let me reshoot. lol. I had only the color white through the scope.

Nice, the positional shooting sounds great.

I took a class where we were shooting from ladders, inside cars, off the wheel of an overturned wheelbarrow, all kinds of funky positions. Made me appreciate just how hard it is to build a good platform from non traditional positions and make shots.

Moving targets at 500y sounds like a phenomenal challenge.

Going to the 3 Gun out at Gravestone this weekend, the 500 yard mover will be part of it. How far were people leading the target? My math says ~38" for 3 mph for a 77gr bullet with a MV of 2,650fps.

Talked to Jeremy about this while I was out at the range a couple of weekends ago - he plans to set it to be a edge hold pace with 77gr.

I'll be sure to stop by this weekend if I see you out there during the match. I'm shooting PM/AM.

This may be my next adventure, now that I'm a member out at Gravestone, I want to start dabbling in long range. Multigun will always be my first choice, but having another competition type to try is really exciting. I've been planning out a build, but I was thinking about a Criterion barrel, so its a little concerning that you had issues with yours.

I used a 1-8plxc that has a mil reticle off another rifle, because it was teased that there would be a mover, and they dont like you scoping with a rifle's scope unless its the several seconds prior to your run. If i hadnt known ahead of time there would have been one, i would not have been able to measure it like i did.

i brought it because my app i use, AB Quantum, has a built in mover calculator. it even has a timer built in.

if you dont use AB Quantum, i think youre crazy. it has gotten so much more powerful in the last 12 months, its just a joy to use.

edited to add, just remember if you are using that app, to ADD or SUBTRACT mils for wind. the lead values are just for lead, and the wind is just for wind. they do not do the math for you (which i can kinda understand why).
