This has come up before but my TexAgs searches aren't finding anything.

I need to have a Shimano Sedona 2500 serviced/repaired. This is my son's reel, it retails below 100 bucks. On our last trip we were wading a little deeper than usual to reach some trout and he was in the fish so it was dunked repeatedly. Despite my best efforts it rusted up.

I took the reel apart and dealt with the rust (steel wool and a few replacement parts) but unfortunately in the process I took apart the spring-loaded articulating arm on the bail and either broke the plastic arm base or can't get the springs set back correctly so the bail won't hold open or spring closed.

I can send it to FTU in Houston but thought I'd see what the OB brain trust has to say about repair options.

Thanks fellas.

Where's the fun in that? His grandad gave him the reel so would prefer to try and save it.

Matthew's Rod & Reel Repair in San Antonio. He is on Rhapsody by the SA Airport. All the fishermen in south Texas use him. Great guy.

My vote as well.

They are really good at the Tacklebox in Victoria. Maybe next time you head to the mid-coast, drop it off? I would also encourage you to get him into something a little more saltwater tolerant and let him continue to throw that reel Grampa gave him for all kinds of freshwater use. Just my personal opinion, as I have my first baitcaster my Grampa gave me when I was 12yo and I would never want to part with it.

Also, Southwestern Service in Dallas may have the parts you need on their website, if you decide to go that route. There is also a reel repair guy down near Hitchcock somewhere if memory serves. Maybe search 2coolfishing.com for it.

I agree with wanting to keep it then. Maybe convince him to make it freshwater/pier only? Then grab him another solid one built for saltwater wading?

Thanks fellas! OB comes through again. I live in B/CS, fish occasionally in Corpus (once a year) but I'm going through Victoria tomorrow so I'll check the Tacklebox out tomorrow.

Recommend me a salt-water rated spinning reel for kids, can't spend 400 bucks on a kids spinning reel.

x2, I've taken a few reels to Matt and they've always done a great job.

Penn Battle.

By far the best "bang for your buck" spinning reels on the market. Sealed drag and full metal body. Not the lightest reel but not too heavy either. They're on the gen IV now but you can easily find previous generation reels for under $120. The Gen IV looks to retail around $150. 2500 or 3000 size are perfect for 99% of what you'll catch in the bay.

I run a Battle III on my spinning rod when I'm forced to throw it!

Consider a Shimano Vanford if $285 is within price range. Significantly lighter and smoother than Penn battle. Mine are about 5 years old and going strong. Upgrade yours and hand down the battle 3.

Doc - While in Victoria you can also go to Waterloo Outfitters. Great shop owned by an Aggie loving person and next door to a former board of regents corporate offices.

Also take a look at the Daiwa Tatula MQ LT 2500. Retails for about $200 and is a great lightweight reel

trick I learned from an old Aggie salt that passed away recently....spent many hours on his boat in palacios

if you dunk a real in saltwater and can't take it apart right away or get it to the shop....put it in a container full of freshwater

it's already been dunked, might as well dunk it in something that will help dissolve salt and not start corroding right away

Yup. I have a first-gen Battle and 2 second-gen Battle rigs for when I'm forced to use gear or for my non-fly flinging friends.

Yep, anytime I am down that way, I try to get by. If I need reels worked on, it is always at the Tacklebox. Brandon is a fountain of knowledge. I do also frequent Waterloo Pro Shop and know the owner there. He is an excellent guy and I use lots of his gear, but they don't do reel repair, thus my recommendation.

A typical Victoria passthrough on my way to POC, costs me about an hour if I do not need gas and groceries, and is never less than $500 during business hours. No one up hear near Austin sells any high end saltwater fishing gear to help with my addictions. I try to only get through Victoria in business hours once a month. Even at that, Waterloo will sometimes be willing to work with me if I call ahead to get things after hours. I told Jimmy he needs to set up an amazon-like locker out front. It wouldn't surprise me if he takes it to heart and finds something.

RIP your wallet!!!

I need to get by there. I used to be in that area a lot more. Hardly ever in DFW anymore.

Waterloo is walking distance from my house.

RIP my wallet.

You can catch Jimmy(Waterloo owner) at a lot of A&M games as well.

Just to put it out there, DadsOleTackle in Conroe did a great job restoring several old Abu Garcia reels I got when my grandfather passed. They were from the 50s and he used to take me fishing with them when I was a kid. They sat in his garage when he got older and didn't function. They run like brand new now and look great. The shop was able to preserve all the original labels that were still hanging on for dear life as well. Awesome guys.
