We even had them southwest of Atlanta. Faint. But you could still see them.

Yall all owe me a small donation. I've spend 3-4 weeks under the stars in the last 4 years north of Canadian border and not seen the Northern Lights.
I intentionally stayed inside and even went to bed early so that the rest of you could enjoy this phenomenon.

You are welcome. I'll post Venmo account later

From what I read, the geomagnetic storm peaks around mid-day today. So my guess is the best time will be as soon as it gets dark

According to Spaceweather.com, the auroras last night were sparked by a double hit from two CMEs that arrived earlier than expected. There is another CME coming today, but I doubt that it will be quite as intense as last night's hit. I hope I am wrong, but who knows.

I still haven't heard whether the X5 flare that happened yesterday sent a CME directed towards earth. If so, it could produce another shot for auroras in the next day or two.

I hope so. The forecast I had seen was for a Kp or 7.67 tonight vs 8.67 last night, but hopefully it is stronger.

Timing also matters. If the peak activity is when its dark, if will be easier to see than a stronger hit that happens when its light and fizzles out by dark.

Forecast from this am suggesting slighter lower activitiy tonight

Sounds like there is some question among the forecasters about whether there is still another CME out there on the way from the X5 flare or whether that one caught up to the two last night and that is why it was so intense. Should know within the next few hours whether it is out there.

I first saw the lights about 8pm and they were just a bit west of north. By 10:00 they were more west than north. Anyone else see this?

Spaceweather is saying the expected CME has hit and it is too weak to re-spark auroras to the level we saw last night. They have lowered their forecast to a G2/G3 storm. Last night was a strong G4.

Do they say how far south they might be seen or is that just a complete crapshoot with where you are and light pollution?
