Hi all,

I have recently been informed that it might be in my best interest to carry when not at work, due to a situation I have found myself in, in relation to my previous employment. I have my concealed carry license (I got it a few years back), but I never bought the corresponding firearm. Partly due to just putting it off, and partly due to the fact that I am a big guy (6'8) with big hands, and none of the grips on smaller firearms felt right in my hands. My .45 is just too large to carry.

I am hoping that this board can (because if you guys can't, I doubt anyone can) help with some suggestions for a relatively budget pistol that has a larger grip but is still small enough as to not be unwieldy. Bonus points if fairly readily available.

Thanks,

AF98

365 XL or glock 43x.

Training too. Find a good defensive pistol class.

The fear is, possibly worse.

A shot was fired into the current chairman's house. Missed his 12 year old daughter by a few feet.

Need to protect myself - at home, I'm safe. 4 dogs, 3 big and loud, and multiple options. Out and about, not so much.

I'll look into both. I've taken a few defensive classes, and have been handling guns just about my whole life. Just hadn't truly needed a concealed before, due to my ginormous hands. Thanks!

If I can carry and conceal a G19, you absolutely can. I don't shoot it as well as my G17 but it's still really comfortable to shoot and pretty accurate.

I'll add that to the list to check out.

My neighbor is 6'3" and he could not fully grip my Glock 19. His hands were too big for it.

Maybe try the Glock 17 or 47 (both full size) before the Glock 19 (compact) or try both full size and compact at the same time.

That was my first thought also. I have carried a G23 concealed for over 25 years. It's all about a quality belt. And a quality holster.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

Maybe try getting your paws around a CZ P-10F. It's a bigger Glock 17 if that is too dainty. Shoots better too IMO. Of the P-10C which is analogous size wise to the G19. The new ported version that just came out is the tits.

Hey OP

Go on YouTube and search Hicock45. He is also 6'8 and does some clever things to fit his hands around guns.

His favorite very guns are Glocks. I'm not sure if a Glock in .45 has a bigger grip or not but it may. My Glock 20 in 10mm has a huge grip but it's way too big to carry.

Man I just googled my own answer.

Check out a Glock 30. It is the size of the 19 so concealable. It has a bigger thicker grip to accommodate the.45acp. That would make a lot of sense for you.

Yea I was going to suggest you find a commander size 1911 with double stack mag. Should make it comfortable for larger hands.
I carry an STI Escort in .45 and it's very concealable but single stack.

P365
G19
P365XL
Hellcat
P365 Macro
Hellcat Pro

These are the top carry pistols in order of the amount of holsters we sell. I personally prefer the Hellcat Pro for my particular grip but every person is different.

FN - FNX - 45

One of the best shooting and most comfy large hand pistols i have ever shot. Although it is large i carry mine easily.

Welcome to come shoot it. Really nice shooter. And fits big hands very well.

Is getting out of Louisiana an option? I'm not much of a pistol guy but like the simplicity of Glocks. Glock 48 is a good size and is concealable.

Glock model 45, which is a 19 slide on a 17 frame.

Staccato CS if you're not worried about a budget.

Oh crap. You really might get scalped.

At 6'8", you have been using things designed for smaller people your whole adult life- probably since jr high. Guns will be the same. Just takes getting used to.

As for concealment - check out Phlster. They have holsters, but a TON of info about effective concealment, printing, comfort, etc. https://youtube.com/@phlster?si=aLRV80xY58kMoqWB

Also, be sure to TRAIN on drawing from concealment. Start by doing it dry at home then go to the range, preferably with a qualified instructor.

What .45 do you have?

What are you wearing while carrying?

I've carried very large handguns successfully, it just takes finding the right combo of clothes, belt, and holster.

A good gun belt used to be my first rec for anyone struggling with carry. Theyre stiffer than regular belts and help distribute the weight without sagging. If you want/need to wear a belt, thats still a great option.

Someone also mentioned Phlster. The Phlster Enigma is a fantastic system. It takes some work to get adjusted right and get used to wearing, but you can carry a full size gun comfortably without a gun belt using it. Its a fantastic system. I've carried full size guns (H&K P30L, Beretta M9A4, 5" 1911 in .45) in my enigma with no issues.

Holster: Vedder LightTuck with Claw.
Carrying a narrow Springfield Hellcat or a standard G19 is comfortable all day; even when driving.

Each holster is specific for the gun model.

Glock 19 and training is the answer.

1. Buy a gun.
2. Carry a gun.
3. Train with a gun.

These can be rearranged into any order you wish, but you will need all 3. Also, carry a reload.

Given your probable hand size, I would take a serious look at H&K. You have several options.

The VP9 series is striker fired like the Glock. I've had a VP9sk and while it is classed in the Glock 26 range, it just FEELS bigger. I haven't fired a regular VP9 but you can put one of those in your hands and see how that works. The great thing H&K has over the Glock are the controls are bigger and far easier to use.

Also, while not as popular as they used to be, the USP series is still a viable handgun. They are hammer fired and come in several variants. The one I had from the '90s until about 5 years ago was a DA/SA with a manual safety and decocker. These are heavier than the G19 but around the same size and their fit relative to your hand may be better than the Glock.

Good luck to you sir.

I own pretty much all the guns mentioned in this thread, and my favorite carry gun is my Sig P320 Spectre Comp.
I can shoot a hair off a nats ass from 50 feet. It is a big gun, but you can make it work. 21 tries to get the bad guy.

It's been a while but I believe that KR Training has a basic pistol course where they provide different guns you can shoot.

I have no idea if it is practical for you to travel to them. But I would check close to wherever you live and see if any places do the same. Sounds perfect for your situation, training combined with trying different firearms

S&W M&P compact comes with three grip sizes. About same size gun as Glock 19. Very reliable.

Only difference between the compact and full size is length of grip, which will be detrimental to a large hand. You can get mag spacers so they can run 17 & 22s, but at that point you might as well be running a full size M&P or go with a 5" performance center since the OP has a large frame to support it.

Compact comes in two available barrel lengths, one is 3.6 I believe, but agree full size might fit better.

I've carried a full size M&P9 for years. No problems concealing it, especially now that the weather is cooling down.

One thing I prefer about the M&P over Glocks or CZ (and I do love my CZ-97B) is that the changable grip additions, especially with the Large size, actually make the grip to thicker, instead of just making it bigger front to back.

FWIW, I'm 6'3", big hands but probably not as big as OP's.

HK P30SK. If you have never handled an HK pistol please keep in mind they come with different triggers and IMO the LEM is the best.

The backstrap and sides are interchangeable to make it smaller or larger
