Im reaching out to the Aggie Network to see if there is anyone who can help my son. He is a senior this year, we decided to get the best animal he could afford to show at a Major this year. That goat was doing great until it passed away (likely from a heart attack). Got him tagged / validated. Until that animal died. We have been incredibly unlucky.

My son still wants to show at a major, we have found another great animal, but everywhere we have asked they keep telling us we are too late and cant get another validation tag for the animal we now have. There has got to be a process for hard luck cases where they can help a senior out and get a new tag / validation. Anyone able to help us here?

Gig em!

Nope, I think you're out of luck. The animals are validated so there's some proof the particular animal belongs to you as of a certain date.

That being said, I'd look into something else besides goats, as your track record as of now is not very good. Also, the idea of going "all in" isn't a great way to do things. This is supposed to be about teaching responsibility, animal stewardship, etc. I've never liked the idea of trying to buy your way into a banner, but I know how the stock show world has changed since I last showed. Best of luck to you and your kid.

Thanks for your input on the validation. However, some of your assumptions aren't accurate.

We understand what the validations is for. We got a validation tag on time. We are asking if there is some way for a hard luck case for seniors to get a late validation and if someone can help.

We didn't "buy" our way into a banner, not even close. The amount of money my son saved on his own only gets him to the bottom of being competitive, he was clearly outspent by many other parents. And no, he doesnt have enough money to buy multiple high dollar animals like those he is competing against. My son does well because these are his projects, not mine. He is winning showmanship routinely from his own hard work and not because he bought his way there.

You dont really know what his track record is. These animals didnt pass away due to anything my son did or didnt do. They were well taken care of, visited vets, etc. He was just unlucky. There aren't anymore animals in his future...he is a senior.

I am on the validation committee at our county. Although state validations are administered locally, the rules are set at the state level.

If there is a solution to your satisfaction, I don't know about it. I've been on this committee for many years and the rules are set on the dates, regardless of any extenuating circumstance.

Your son had a very bad string of events losing the animals. But, unless I'm missing something, he is out of options. He can't 'borrow' an animal from a friend who already validated because that validation is in that friend's name. And he can't buy an extra tag another shower may have but will not use.

You might consider another option. I am on the committee for lambs and goats so I'm not fully educated on other species. But, he may still have a chance to show at a major in poultry and/or rabbits. POSSIBLY pigs but I don't know when that validation is due.

Yea, thanks for your help.

We do have another animal which we bought and paid for after all this that is not tagged for another show that would do very well in a major. We are using it for "jack pots" as a consolation, but would love to find a way to get it validated. I am surprised there is no way we could get "credit" for the validation we paid for already and apply that credit to this other goat. Im not sure what the validation process entails, but im surprised there isn't a "1 off" type of deal to help kids out or maybe have an appeal process for hard luck situations.

The validation process is to ensure that particular animal belongs to a particular person as of a certain date. What you're trying to do is exactly what the validation process is intended to prevent. And I don't mean that in a mean way or that I think you're trying to get around a rule. But the process is there to keep someone from swapping out an animal that doesn't belong to them as of the validation date. The tags aren't intended to be transferable. Now I don't know if the rules have changed, but you used to validate animals within a family unit so that if one died or something happened to it, another family member could show that animal. We usually had two steers per sibling, and validated all them between my sister and I so they could be swapped if needed.

Dang OP, that sucks for you and your son, but I think yall may be out of luck if you didn't validate a couple extra animals to have as back-ups for this situation. I have never heard of an exception for an animal dying and the state allowing a late validation.

Aren't nose prints and hair samples pulled from each validated animal as well? Just to ensure it's the same animal the tag was originally assigned to.

Sorry to hear about this, that really stinks. As someone who raises sheep and goats, they are born looking for a place to die.

You cannot get credit for another animal. That invalidates the whole validation process. Tags are connected to not only a shower, but to the animal. That is why we take nose prints, pull hair, etc., to prove that tag belongs to not only the shower, but more important, the animal. Otherwise, there would be chaos with all kinds of animals being shown.

There is no way around this for goats. It's done. Best to look at another species if he wants to go to a a major.

I, too, am not familiar of any work around. On the cattle side, we have open shows for breeds that don't require validation. Not sure about other species. I'd try and find a breeder that would lease a heifer to your son for an open show or even possibly buy one. Where you located? We show Santa Gertrudis and I could maybe get you in contact with some folks.

I think the only species still available to validate would be hogs. You'll need to check with your county/school FFA program ASAP.

This is a great idea. OP, go find a narrow. You can still validate and that species is a very good one for a major. You may not be able to take it to every major like most goats. Pigs grow fast. But you can still go to a major.

Thanks yall for the ideas.

While my daughter has shown pigs / steer, my son is only interested in goats.

Yea I agree that is what the validation process is and is needed. I also agree there should be a set date to get it done to make it easier on the county staff. Im just wondering why there isn't a process to do it for additional animals under unique circumstances such as this. It may be that it opens a can of worms and could turn into a ton of work.

There are definitely people that would kill an animal to get a better one into a show. This absolutely sucks for your son, but I really don't think there's a way around it. A different species like some have mentioned is probably the closest you're gonna come.

A hardship rule would absolutely be abused by some of these sorry parents who want to win at all costs. They'll spend whatever it takes and they aren't doing their kids any favors - missing out on what should be an opportunity to teach responsibility and the work ethic.

We've had families like this in our local show, win Grand year after year with their money. Their kids don't even know the animals. Ridiculous.
I don't think you know me.
