Took my youngest son out this past weekend. Friday night had some nice deer, but we were targeting mature 8s. Had what we thought might have been a nice looking 8 come out after sunset, but too dark to count points.
Came back to the same blind the next morning and at 7:45, this nice looking 8 walked out. .243 at 150 yards. Nailed him in the shoulder, he made it about 30 yards and succumbed. Was worried because when the guide said he could take the deer, my son started shaking like the shooting hand of The Waco Kid. "Point, breathe, squeeze," I reminded him. He said when it came time to take the shot, everything just became still. The boxes of bullets spent at the range paid off.
3 days later, my son still hasn't come down. My brother brought out his son as well who also got his first deer. Went out the rest of the weekend for pigs and predators. My dog will be sad to find out his best friend is a canine slayer.
Second year I've taken one of my boys out to Llano Springs Ranch south of Junction to get their first deer. He has a classic 8 hunt targeting 8 points that are 4.5 or older. Both boys have gotten nice 6.5 bucks off the ranch. And the property is absolutely gorgeous and well managed.
