Bought him a 6mm ARC in an AR platform two years ago (agalaska will love it
). Last year I told him if he can hit three shots in a row in a 4" bulls eye at 100 yards then he could go hunting with me.
After a couple of days of practicing he was able to do it. So off we went. I told him he could shoot a doe his first year, then a spike the next and finally we can go trophy hunting( although our part of the state doesn't have much. If we see a 120 incher then that's pretty good.
Our first hunt last year we saw a spike and he wanted to kill it so bad but I told him to wait for a doe. Big mistake on my part. We didn't see another deer for 8 more sits. Nothing! Poor kid was super patient but nothing to show in his first year. Looking back I'm kind of glad. Gives him a perspective that we're hunting instead of killing.
Fast forward to this year I told him he could shoot anything legal. First hunt we saw about 5 doe but asked if he wanted to wait for a buck. He did. So we waited and we got a glimpse of a legal 8 but he wouldn't stop chasing long enough for him to get a shot. Next hunt we saw nothing. Fearing another year of nothing we decided to shoot the first doe we saw on the next hunt.
Next hunt arrives and 5 doe come to the feeder. He sets his cross hairs on a mature doe and boom! Annnnndddd he missed. Thankful for the suppressor the group of doe jumped and kind of looked confused. They went back to eating so he set his crosshairs on the same doe. Booom!! Annnnnd he missed again. lol. This time they all scatter and don't come back.
Puzzled we left the stand and went to the ranch range to make sure it's still sighted in. It was. Just a case of first shot jitters.
Thanksgiving morning! Same 5 doe come out about 6:30. We watch them until legal shooting light. My boy sets his sights on most likely the same doe. Told him to take his time, squeeze the trigger and let it surprise you. Booom! Doe went flying up, ran ten yards and collapsed. Bullseye in the shoulder! Kid was so damn excited and his dad was pretty happy too.
Thanks for listening and happy thanksgiving!
