I picked up a 5'x7'x8' wooden storage crate as a stand blank. It's a good start and I plan to frame it out to make it sturdy for the long term, add a tin roof, and probably put it on a 4' stand. I've got access to tractors w/pallet forks at the build site and the lease so I'm not going to worry about weight too much.

I haven't built a stand in ~15 years and it was just a 4'x4' for me back then. I'm hunting with my 9 YO now and will be for hopefully the next 9 years.

My question is what do you guys have in your stand that you love or wish you had.

Current list of accoutrements:

Carpeted floor.
Glass or plexi windows.
Urinal. (Plan is to dig a small hole and run a tube down into it)
Propane heater.

What else should I consider??

Shelves. Especially in the front to rest a bag on and also leave your binos or phone on.

Quiet office chairs. That's all you need. Everything else is creature comforts

All great ideas!

I've got good office chairs. I even picked up a bar/lab table height from the surplus outfit at TAMU for my son. I can remember never being high enough as a kid, having to sit on my foot to get a good angle and rest.

Boojie-ness level - Moderate. I do like to be comfortable though and if I'm going to take the time to build it, why not make it comfortable?

Keep 'em coming.

Can you recommend a model that's quiet?

One thing I am mulling over is some sort of vent on two sides at about knee level. Early season hunts can be hot and opening the windows only really ventilates the top part of the stand. Maybe a small 4"x 4" dryer vent with a slide damper on either side will help get some fresh air into that part of the stand too.

Otherwise, hooks and shelves are great. Maybe a spot to prop your feet up on.

  • GOOD windows - Deerview are top of the line and have given me zero issues over the last ~7 years on my stand. Think long and hard about the height and what configuration you want. Everybody is different on preferences - for example my front has 2 separate windows instead of one long one. I prefer that over what my buddy has with the single long window. Just me though.
  • On window height - think about who will be hunting there. I wish I had made mine about 4" lower because it wouldn't have made a difference at all for me, but would have made getting set up to shoot for my daughter significantly easier.
  • Shelves/shooting comfort. I had just the 2x4 window frame as support for a while on mine but added 5/4x6 deck board shelves on the 3 sides I have windows on last year. Game changer. Highly recommend, holds the sandbag way better and helps steady the rifle better.
  • Solar setup with interior light (mine is a green kayak light that does great), phone chargers and a USB fan. That fan has probably been the best single bougie thing I've added - when it's hot out it is a Godsend. This summer I'm going to run another power line to the other side and add another usb station with a fan as well. I use my solar setup as a battery charger for my spare feeder and game cam batteries, which is also what I use to power the setup. Haven't run out of juice on a battery yet and it's been in place for 5 years or so. It is hella convenient to be able to swap a battery out right there instead of having to take it back to camp or the house or wherever.
  • Porch ouside the door. Make it big enough you can easily access the blind without worrying about falling off or whatever.
  • I put rubber mats in the floor of mine instead of carpet. Easier to clean, still keeps the sound down and chairs roll on them better than carpet. Plus it doesn't get the deer camp funk smell that carpet does.
  • Wall hooks - think about your layout, where you'll hang your binos, rangefinder, hat, backpack, whatever and put good wall hooks. When I get in my blind everything has its place and I'm set up within a few minutes and can reach for anything there without having to look for it or at it. Get a system that works for you.
  • Mr. Buddy heater for the 3 days a year it actually gets cold
  • I added gun rack hooks on mine so I can put my rifles on the wall without them being in the way or me having to worry about knocking one over, etc. I personally prefer it to the lean the gun in the corner that I used to do. Access is easy and if it's any slower than grabbing it out of the corner, it isn't enough that it's made any difference on my ability to shoot deer or pigs.
  • Seal it up. A dry stand is far better and far more comfortable than one that leaks when it rains or lets the wind blow through cracks and openings. The old "I grew up hunting in a rickety stand with holes everywhere, so I don't need anything more!" is a dumb argument to me.
Couple of things I need to add -

Footrest. I failed to put a 2x4 in front of where I sit that would serve as a footrest for when I take a nap. Easy fix that I need to do.

Beer can shelves. Need more random shelves for the empties because I don't clean it out every hunt.

I often have my daughter with me when I hunt, so the urinal wouldn't work for me. I just piss off the back porch when I need to, havent scared a deer off yet.

Not something I need to add to the stand - but I need to make a place I can go in the woods and take a solid dump instead of squatting like a 3rd world refugee when the whiskey kicks in. My buddy made a crapper out of a protein tub and a toilet seat that works awesome, so that will be one of my next projects.

If you aren't building a beer pyramid in a box blind you are doing it wrong.

Could we get a disclaimer on the top of this thread so Alaska Ag doesn't have a stroke reading about creature comforts and usb plugs in a deer blind?

use outdoor carpet or a rubber mat. especially if you have grassburs or anything like that in the area you hunt.

put the carpet on the walls, not just the floor. Makes the blind much quieter, when you inevitably kick or scrape the blind wall with your boots while moving around for a shot.

I'll always say stairs and a front porch, but probably not needed for a four-foot stand.
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.

I bet if you fell from a 4 foot stand getting out or in you'd say different.

Nothing - and I mean absolutely nothing - wrong with easy safe access in and out of a stand.

Make sure the chair is plenty comfy. Nothing like those early afternoon deer stand naps. Best sleep a man can get.

I agree. I'll never crawl in a bottom entry or ladder blind without a front porch again at my age. But they do add to the expense

If you think there's a chance you or your son will bow hunt from it, consider some of the window size/placement. I have bow stands at the lease that people also rifle hunt from with a portable gun rest.

Also, deerview windows are the best.

If your roof is strong enough, these are absolutely silent and extremely comfortable.

We mount our shelves about 6-8" below the window. That way, you can still use the shelf is a deer is looking your way. If it's mounted flush with the window, you will have to "freeze" if you're trying to lay down your binos and a deer looks at ya!

If you are buying chairs, look at gaming chairs. I bought my first pair for one of my blinds because they were on sale and cheaper than the ones I normally use, now that is all I will buy. I wish I would have done the following, when you are designing your windows, consider adding a solid slider or flip type shutter for each window that you can use to protect them during the off season. You can use them individually during the season to keep the sun from sky lining you in the blind when it is behind you.
