Howdy all - My two grandsons (10 and 7) love the outdoors. They were recently taken hiunting by their Dad and both succeeded in killing a deer. Anyway, I'd like to get them a metal detector for Christmas. Does anyone have a recommendation for how nice or quality a detector I should get for two young boys?

Appreciate any advice.

Thank you.

The "Ace" line of MD's from Garrett Metal Detectors are known to be a very good "starter" MD. I don't know if the shaft can be sized down to a kids size, but they have a website.

Garrett Ace 250.

The shaft can be adjusted quite a bit. My 10 year old can swing it no problem but he's tall for his age. Can a drill a few holes in the aluminum outer sleeve to get it even shorter if need be.

My first detector was a $100 bounty hunter (discovery 2200 I think), I have expensive detectors now but honestly the biggest difference between them and the cheapo is discrimination and waterproofness/saltwater use, the cheapo is easy to use and the depth is pretty good, and kids are going to dig everything anyway. Looks like bounty hunter makes a youth model that's $50, probably has the same guts as the discovery. I would recommend spending some money on a pin pointer, the cheapos are finicky. I have a couple vibra probes, they are pretty indestructible. Also get them a couple of those orange plastic shovels they sell for camping/digging poo holes
