Anyone have any recommendations for fencing around a deer feeder for keeping hogs out. Panels? Roll fencing?
What height do you recommend?

Thanks.

Hog panel fencing will work. Anything 3' tall will keep them out. The pen just needs to be large enough so deer can get in and out easily without feeling trapped.

As poster above mentioned, hog panels which standard are 34" tall. They will keep MOST pigs out… not all pigs are equal and some have watched too many spider man movies, while others have evolved the ability to jump really high.

I personally recommend going at least 32x32' (2 panels x 2 panels) but the bigger the better. I'd entertain a circle design too but all of ours are square or rectangle. If you have cows, run a strand of barb wire on top 6" or so above panel.

Hog panel will work for a little bit until they push and rut under. I don't fence them out personally. They taste as good or better than venison, so I shoot either one.

Get the stainless steel zip ties at harbor freight for quick work on the tposts.

Why not just use t post clips? They're a lot cheaper

When one my clients asks, I usually tell them to go with hog panel, make the pen circular and twice the size you think you need, and dont center the feeder. It's fine to sling some corn outside the fence in a "hog kill zone"

I used 16'x36" hog panels with T posts every 8 feet, haven't had any issues with hogs getting in or cows pushing it over. I think I used 16 panels but that's because I fenced in a corn and a protein feeder. You can't see the whole pen in the photo but you get a good idea.

We've switched to 2 strands of electric fence and it keeps 95% of the pigs out. Only time there was an issue involved a protein feeder and a weak ground.

Nice thing is you can easily make it large enough that no corn gets out without spending a fortune.

Havent had any issues with pigs getting into my pens using regular hog panel. Pens are circular(ish) with t-posts every 8 feet and, depending on where the ******* cows have messed things up, even closer than that in places. 1 or 2 strands of barbed wire above the panels.

When you set your t-posts, put them in the ground leaning away from the center of the pen. That way you can pull on your barbed wire and get it tight without collapsing the pen inwards. You need the barbed wire tight to keep the ******* cows out.

I have one pen that has a regular 4 strand fence on one side so the pigs can get in it and I have a feeder without anything around it that is my sacrificial pig/cow feeder. Helps the cows stay away from the pens with fences and protein.

We just had hog panel and it worked great for years. Then, once the first cow figured out she could jump over it, ten more followed her lead.

We put up hog panels around our feeders several years ago. It has worked really well. We hardly see hogs anymore.

We put up 48 panels spread among 4 different feeders in one day. We used our tractor loader bucket to push in the T-posts. Worked really well

Hog panels overlapped a couple of squares. Heavy duty zip ties to connect them. One low one high and 2 in the middle of each connection. Angle zip tie so it goes above and below the panel strand that way it won't slide up and down.

Make it all on the ground as a long straight section then just stand up. If you don't have room make it in two halves. They go up real fast this way. I'd go 10 panels makes a 50' diameter circle.

Suggestion to offset feeder to throw some outside for hog kill zone is good idea.

4 t post at 3-6-9-12 o'clock. Then use 4 ft pieces of rebar or the little garden t posts between main posts to strengthen is fast and dirty. More t post if you want it super secure.

Zip ties occasionally pop. Just replace as needed.

That's something I no longer have to worry with here in the Ozarks. Feeders are not allowed so no having to build pens. Feel for you guys…I remember well.

Anyone ever tried these or something like it? They are expensive but portable, easy to open to access the feeder, and super durable

I know a couple guys that have them and they are great if you hunt in super rocky areas where it's almost impossible to drive t-posts. Otherwise $120+ is the going rate per 16' piece, so your gunna spend a bit but it does make life much easier.

I helped my father in law build a pen on his lease in East Texas and was amazed how easy it was to build. I didn't have to hit a single post more than 3 times.

Meanwhile, where I hunt in the hill country, I am lucky if I haven't hit a rock after the first 3 hits and 4" into the ground.

Not sure what they run these days but any of our feeders that are inside the main pastures on the ranch have cattle panels that we simply chop off the top set of rails. We use the skinny small diameter ones. No t posts. Easy to open to fill, and you can make a circle as wide as you want. It keeps out all the horses and cows, but the deer will jump in.

This is what I've had up for over 13+ years now. Never had an issue other than when I first put it up the zip ties dry rotting after about a year. Switched over to cable clamps and haven't had an issue.

8 panel minimum, avoid corners and build as a circle

If you can, put a neutral strand in between your hot wires, and tie your ground into that. When a critter completes the circuit, they'll get a solid jolt.
