It's a race to something alright...

Things have changed a lot since my '19 foot Kenner, a Johnson 88, some 5 gallon gas cans and some sleeping bags on the spit going into Panther.

Yea that's not a production engine built by Mercury Ouboards. It's a Mercury 450R Outboard that's been tuned and modified by Ramey Racing which does custom automotive and limited marine racing powerplants. They showed this engine off at this years PRI show in Indiana.
They are building them to use on a boat in the 2026 Shootout held annually at Lake of The Ozarks. The Shootout is the premier powerboat racing event in the country….and is an old school "run what you brung" racing venue that is unbelievable.

I thought they were making the 450r to a 600.

And now this is a supercharged 500r with a bigger flywheel and tune to make 750.

Either way....you know what they say....once you go Black.....you might not get back....

I met Shawn at the Shootout and they were running a 640HP on their current boat then. He was doing a little covert talking about the one they were were working on. They were using a MoTec ECU custom tuned and a K Supercharger kit which took the 450R to the 640HP. The 500R Mercury production motor is nothing more than a 450R with tuning and a few other changes.. The new 750 Demon Ramey is making (the one pictured is their 450R with their "Kong Supercharger Kit", the MoTec ECU, larger flywheel, custom injectors, additional custom tuning and other engine internals to withstand the R's) to get the 750HP.
Performance outboard technology has really changed over the last 6-7 years. However, with that ultra tuning longevity definitely suffers. To make that HP those engines have to turn RPM's approaching 7000 and all moving parts have to withstand that.

I have been involved and participated in ultra high performance boats for over 45 years. It has been my experience that .001% of the people who hang those engines on 1500lb or lighter hulls (that can only go fast in a straight line anyway) actually have the ability to drive those boats to their max speed. It's strictly an ego thing.

Ego, yep. I was fishing a Bassmasters tournament back in the 90s and my third day partner was Charlie Reed (he won the 1986 Classic). We had one of the camera boats with us all day. All flipping and pitching so the camera boat was very close. Bob Cobb was asking Charlie questions most of the day.

At one point Bob asked Charlie if he fished any of the Invitational Trails (if memory serves me, there were Western, Central, and Eastern Invitational Trails at that time). Charlie said hell no, those are full of a bunch of amateur idiots flying all over the water and that it was a wonder somebody didn't get killed every tournament. He said it was like a boat race more than a fishing tournament. And I am pretty sure B.A.S.S. had a 150hp limit at that time. Charlie would be turning over in his grave if he saw what they are running now!
