I have been involved and participated in ultra high performance boats for over 45 years. It has been my experience that .001% of the people who hang those engines on 1500lb or lighter hulls (that can only go fast in a straight line anyway) actually have the ability to drive those boats to their max speed. It's strictly an ego thing.
Ego, yep. I was fishing a Bassmasters tournament back in the 90s and my third day partner was Charlie Reed (he won the 1986 Classic). We had one of the camera boats with us all day. All flipping and pitching so the camera boat was very close. Bob Cobb was asking Charlie questions most of the day.
At one point Bob asked Charlie if he fished any of the Invitational Trails (if memory serves me, there were Western, Central, and Eastern Invitational Trails at that time). Charlie said hell no, those are full of a bunch of amateur idiots flying all over the water and that it was a wonder somebody didn't get killed every tournament. He said it was like a boat race more than a fishing tournament. And I am pretty sure B.A.S.S. had a 150hp limit at that time. Charlie would be turning over in his grave if he saw what they are running now!
