My dad had a diesel JD Gator that ran when it was put up in the barn when he retired. I have now started running a handful of cows and it would be a huge help for me to have it usable. It was full of rats nests when we pulled it out of the barn. I replaced the battery and it has juice to the lights and panel behind the steering wheel but when you turn the key, there's nothing else. Short of just having the mechanic come out, where is the first place I should look for wires the rats probably chewed through?

Remove seat and raise bed and start looking. Hopefully it's just one wire chewed through that you can splice.

It goes without saying, if there's old fuel in the tank, drain and replace with fresh. Change oil and filter, air filter. Plugs as needed, etc.

Check all the fuses and relays.

Take a screwdriver and short the starter to see if it'll start. If it does, then it could just be the key switch or the wires running to it

We did check the fuses and they were good.

The electrical systems on these units, especially if this is a mid 90s model, which it sounds like it might be based on your description are very very simple. There isn't but a handful of wires. If it isn't something obvious like a chewed through piece of wire, start using a voltmeter for continuity. Honestly, I would probably go straight to the starter solenoid. In a relentless effort to punish China, I often buy stuff like this on Amazon for seven dollars purely for testing purposes. If it works, you can buy one of the high dollar ones from John Deere and then send the one from Amazon back. Truth be told, John Deere probably buys it from China anyway. That's where I would start.

If you hit the start key, and nothing happens, I start looking at solenoids, if you hit the start key and it clicks, I looked directly at the starter. These John Deere units for whatever reason have starters that are very fickle. I have several gators and most of them have a piece of rebar in the bed specifically for tapping the starter when they start giving me trouble lol

Is this an early model diesel with rectangle headlights?

No it's a mid to late 2000's model. Round headlights

Test voltage at the starter. No click? Also check your battery connections. Had a starting issue and it was a bad connection.

Is it in neutral?
