My girls (under 7) have been begging to go fishing. I haven't fished since I was about 10 and that was lake fishing in New Mexico. Now we are in Navasota and I'm clearly out of my depth. I purchased beginner/kids rods and reels with little tackle boxes for Christmas. My plan is to take them fishing Christmas Day at Bush Library and maybe Aggie Park. Both places require barbless hooks. I've been to Academy and Bass Pro and I have failed to find any. Anyone know where I can secure any in BCS or do I just need to order.

PS - I have never felt more out of my depth than walking down the fishing sections in either BP or Academy. I have no idea what I'm doing. Real dad fail.

If you can't find them, get some pliers and crush/remove barbs yourself. A little janky but should work.

Smash them down on the hook. Simple. No worries.

Don't feel bad about it, I don't fish either. I am very good at drowning worms, but actually fishing not so much. The point is to just get them outdoors and away from electronics and enjoy the time together.

Try corn or salmon eggs for bait.

If you are fishing for stocked hatchery trout, they tend to love power bait. The little pink or orange or yellow premoded ball baits in a jar will work.

Funny story about barbless hooks...

We were bay fishing this summer in West Bay with a some buddies and one buddy kept flying through shrimp constantly flinging them off left and right and we were all busting his balls.

At one point I was digging in the livewell and grabbed him a shrimp and went to go put it on his hook for him and see he has a barbless hook and automatically say 'WTF man that's why every shrimp you put on flies off because you don't have barbs'.

Well he's from the PNW and apparently in Washington it's illegal to fish with barbed hooks so that's all he's ever fished with and thought that was the norm.

Quite the contrary.

You're getting your kids outdoors instead of letting electronics raise them, and you're learning a hobby together.

You're solidifying your spot as THE authority in their lives. Mom might of carried them around for 9 months but Dad shows them how to navigate life.

My boys got into fishing this year and have more fishing rods and equipment than I have owned in my life. They love fishing Aggie Park and Central Park.

If you have some time it might help to watch a YouTube video or two with them. Gives them an idea of what to expect and how it all works. Also gives you a chance to explain some stuff to them without the rush of trying to get a line in the water.

I'm taking my 7yo son floundering tonight and he really enjoyed doing this with me just a little while ago.

Last Pointer - Take lots of pictures!

If you're really committed to buying barbless hooks, you'll usually find them around the fly tying materials. Not sure if there's anywhere around CS that sells that kind of stuff.
