And I thought New Braunfels has a deer problem.

I found this to be an interesting read. Not surprised though, especially since hunting is limited.

Seems like landowners over there could benefit on the concept of leasing.

And Brits embrace a healthy, bountiful protein source.

I lived in the highlands of Scotland for 3 years. Killed many many many roe deer and red stags in those mountains and valleys.

It has to die from slitting the throat with a knife and then be prayed over.

I had a hell of a time and eventually gave up trying to introduce venison to some of my international student workers.I settled on special ordering a brisket instead. It seemed like good diplomacy.

I hope y'all realize that this is the path we're on in much of the USA- hunting is becoming too expensive and reserved for the elites. Maybe not in 50 years but probably not much longer than that.

Then you end up with muddle-headed twits who make statements like these from the OP's link:

Quote:

But there is also the question of what is most humane - and best - for the animals. Elisa Allen, vice-president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), says: "We don't need to eat deer and deer don't wish to be eaten." She calls instead for "humane, sustainable methods of population control".

But while governments in all parts of the UK may face tougher decisions ahead if they really want to bring deer numbers under control, the example of Lucy Manthorpe's farm shows the change that can be made to the landscape if the issue is tackled.

Since she hired staff to deal with it, areas that were barren ground have begun bursting with oxlips and early purple orchids. Rare trees are growing again too, she says.

The farm has also recorded significant increases in moths and breeding birds.

"The deer are not deciding what's going to happen any more," she tells me. "Nature is deciding."

The Brits need to massively expand access to hunting these deer. But, they probably won't.

Seems like a huge opportunity for butchers and venison jerky producers . I'm sure the regulatory hurdles are high tho.

If they don't want to open up hunting more freely to the general population then there's an opportunity for a commercial outfit. Check out Broken Arrow Ranch out of Ingram for how they use professional shooters and have mobile processing set-ups to kill an animal and then immediately begin processing it in a special, refrigerated unit.

There's probably a big market in the UK and Europe for free-range, organic meat like the venison that could be produced under such a model.

My SIL family have farms in England - someone 2-3k acres. He said they have a couple of guys who they let hunt on their places for deer control. He said he thinks they took something like 48-50 last year. He is a wing shooter. I told him he needs to purchase a rifle and I have me over for some fun!
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.
