I guess it was only a matter of time, but I just picked up three deer from the processor before Christmas and my freezer went out. Chit.

This afternoon when I got home I kept hearing a random noise from the utility room. I didn't think anything of it until it finally hit me what that noise was... the freezer trying to kick on. Opened it up to only a chilled freezer.

I dumped all the store bought processed crap out of the kitchen freezer and stuffed as much meat into it as I could. Then ran to Home Depot and picked up another. This was not the plan for the evening.

Working on staying more positive in 2026, so here we go:

- I always wanted a nice stand up freezer, and now I have a 16 cu ft. Saved $300 because it was on sale
- thawed out some pheasant I was too lazy to take to the taxidermist. Taking them in the morning now
- I have a quarter steer about to be ready for pick up and this could have been a whole lot worse. I only ended up throwing out about 30 pounds of meat and all the unhealthy stuff in the inside freezer.

TLDR: Check your freezer, Home Depot is having a good sale, stay positive

We just had a thread on freezer alarms too! Sounds like it could've been worse so be thankful! I've lost 2-3 deer entirely after traveling for work and wife not catching it soon enough.

I make it a habit that every time I leave the garage to check and see if the orange light is lit on my chest freezer. I've never had an issue with it.

We had a chest freezer years ago. It was a wedding present, believe it or not.

It went out one weekend while we were gone. The smell was pretty horrible when we had to clean it out.

Ugh. Had that happen post college. Some shady little apartment and the electricity went out when I was away for the weekend. Came back to a crime scene and the smell was weapons-grade. Gagged worse than my first diaper duty with the kids.

Many moons ago I had a large chest freezer full of venison and beef in my garage. Went out there one day to cut a board. All electrical outlets were in use, so I was just going to briefly unplug the freezer to run my saw. Got distracted and never plugged it back in. A week later, walked in the garage and smelled something. I'm having a flashback now as I remember opening that freezer…there were some really nasty organisms swimming around in lukewarm water. The smell was unreal. One of the worst experiences of my life getting that mess out of there. Afterward, I cleaned up the freezer as best I could and sold it to a used appliance guy. Couldn't bear to use it again!

I did this exact thing once except I discovered mine when I went to get a bag of ice for a cooler when going to a concert. Opened the freezer, smelled the "smell of death' and Immediately slammed it shut. I looked over at the outlet and plugged it back in basically cyro-freezing or Han Soloing the contents in one complete block of ice. I was going to be moving soon so when it came to moving day I slowly defrosted the freezer and threw things away as I could chisel them out of the ice then threw the freezer in the dumpster I had rented as I had tore the inside up Chiseling the contents out of the ice.

I had a freezer go out without any kind of notice. I was unaware of the freezer malfunction as the light was still green and it looked like it was still working if you walked by it. Anyway, it was in my garage, in July, in San Antonio. I went to grab some red fish, and the smell!!! It was a smell I had never suffered through before. I have a pretty strong stomach. I'm not one to throw up over dead bodies, or blood, or urine, feces, puss, it generally doesn't bother me. This smell, however, a mixture a putrid meat, broccoli farts, bad fish and god knows what else, I almost hurled.

It took me a good hour to build up the gumption to mask up and clear everything out and throw the freezer away. In that time, vultures started to gather on the street lights on my street. I will be investing in a very modern up to date freezer and alarm.

Had this happen to us. Dad rented a little house out by Texoma for vacation time (read fishing, dad loved fishing). Anyhow, we were out when the sand bass were running, and did well. Filleted them, packed in water in baggies and stored them in the fridge freezer. Came back a couple of weekends later, only to find the fridge decided to die. That weekend was not nearly as much fun as we hoped for.

Best investment (after learning the hard way and loosing an upright freezer full). Connects to WiFi with an app, has a local alarm, and a remote alarm that you can put in the house (if you have the freezer in the garage).
