Pic taken between Falfurrias & Hebbronville, beautiful bird. Blue head, green & yellow on him but I don't know the correct name of the bird. I figured that the OB would know.

Thank you. Someone else said that but I wasn't sure that was the real name or if they just made it up.

Really pretty birds for south/west Texas! I've only seen a few where we hunt but they're awesome looking. Now I just want to see a painted bunting…

Their habitat is slowly starting to creep north and their breeding with blue jays.
The offspring I've see are hideous. You'd think two beautiful birds would yield another but nope.

Never seen one of these. Thanks for the pic.

The older I get, the more birdwatching makes sense to me.

I started throwing out seeds around my camper while i'm in South Texas working. The one in the pic was near a deer feeder, but I've had several come close to the camper.

We had a pair of them show up in the backyard last spring. Only hung around for about two days, but they are really cool looking birds.

FYI ,"Merlin Bird ID" is a neat app. Identifies birds by sound and/or picture. btw App confirms the Green Jay ID.

After 40, birdwatching really sneaks up on you.

As a kid, I remember them only being in the Valley. Eithin the last 10 years, I saw one between Mathis and Skidmore. I believe my uncle has had themm on his place in Quihi. But they are definitely moving north.

I wish chachalacas would too.

Seeing quite a few of these in urban Corpus Christi area these days. Deer feeders in the Goliad area are covered up in green days all season long.

Same could be said for Caracaras, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, and White Winged Doves. All three have moved their territories hundreds of miles northward over the last few decades.

There is a breeding population as forth north as Tennessee now for BBW ducks. I never saw a White Wing around Katy until 2000s and now they're everywhere.

Found a frozen painted bunting on my driveway during snowmageddon in college station. Also had the Merlin bird app pick up a few of their calls but never saw. Beautiful bird.

Watch the movie "The Big Year" with Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson if you haven't already. Very fun and enjoyable film.
