Is this a pain free process? My son has been working his tail off to finish his FFA project (smoker trailer) before Fort Worth next weekend. I heard from the teacher yesterday that he may not be able to attend since FW requires all trailers to have a license plate and she's out if town next week.

Online it says it "must be inspected by an auto theft law enforcement officer. Authorized inspectors can be found by contacting a local law enforcement agency"

We're in Kerr County so I'm not sure if we have to go to a regional office. I plan to call the DMV and Sheriff's Office first thing Monday, but I figured a few of you may be familiar. TIA!

I did it once and it was a smooth process that didn't take long. Call on Monday - you should be fine

Yep. I make several strange request trailers a year for people. I send em down the road but they have all gotten it done on their own with no reports back to me of any issues.

In Williamson County we go in for the inspection but inspections are only done on Wednesdays during a specific a one hour window, during business hours. Then have to make an in person appt at county for registration.

Hopefully it's easier outside of thr Austin area.

I did this a couple months ago

If you have the serial number it is easy and you don't have to get the cop inspection. Just take a proof of sale and picture of serial number to tax office. Pay the fee and walk out with plates

Thanks guys!

Is the serial number on the coupler? I'm out of town until this afternoon so I'm not looking at it. He's built it from ground up, so we'd only have receipts for material.

My understanding is the VIN only comes on manufactured trailers, you wouldnt have one on a homemade trailer....having that VIN precludes you from having to do the inspection because the manufacturers are known to be building road worthy trailers

Homemade trailer is a little different. You will have to get it weighed by a certified truck scale and have the weigh ticket. It is a different form that you fill out at the tax office. As long as you are under 4000 pounds still good to get the plate without having cops. Now if you want a vin and title then you have to get the cops to inspect. Get a vin sticker and then it can be titled.
