Educate me on crossbows. Shoulder is getting worn out but want to keep hunting in October. Only to be used for WT and pigs with a max intended range of 50 yds. Don't want to spend $1K when $500 works. TIA.

I have hunted exclusively with a crossbow for the last six years. I learned almost everything from reading the crossbow nation forum and watching death by bunjie videos on YouTube.
I own a $1000 crossbow and a $500 crossbow. The difference between the two is integrated cocking and the ability to decock. Both bows will get the job done but the $1000 bow is the only one that's made it into the blind. The fit and feel are just better and I'm more comfortable with it.
Things to consider:
-Are you physically able to rope cock the bow or do you need a crank?
-Do you want to be able to decock the bow or are you ok shooting it after every hunt?
-If you want to be able to shoot a white tail at 50 yards I would get a bow that shoots at least 400 fps.
-Crossbows require string maintenance. If you don't have a press or a trusted dealer to do the maintenance you should consider a bow that doesn't require a press - Excalibur or mission sub1.
-Every stock scope I've had has been junk. Be prepared to replace it down the road.
-Shoulder as many bows as you can. They all balance and feel differently.
If you are comfortable buying online check out Wyvern Creations. Dave's prices are very competitive with no sales tax and free shipping. He will promptly answer any questions you might have via email.
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Got one a few years ago. Don't care to hunt with a bow but needed something to hunt with in Oct. Plus my daughters can hunt with it during bow season, Mine was a Raven. Only brand they had at the archery store. It is pretty easy to use and has a crank and came with a scope with distance markers on the scope. Shot it twice at the store, adjusted scope and it has been bullseye the rest of the time. Got a BOG death grip to hold it while the girls aim and shoot. Store said you had to get it restrung every two years. Don't let the compound bow guys who think they are primitive Indians scare you from buying one.

Thanks everyone and great questions that I need to ask and follow up. No worries about smack and would probably have done the same 30 years when I started bow hunting exclusively. Now that I have retired, I plan to also get a muzzle loader so I can spend more time in hunt. Keep the advice coming.

do you want a real muzzleloader or the new fancy modern ones that basically make it no different than regular rifle?

my dad and i have been using a Traditions Hawken Woodsman for 30 plus years. it is a ton of fun.

Traditions now makes one called the Shedhorn that is basically a Hawken with a removable breach plug. makes cleaning it a thousand times easier. i'm planning on picking one up in the near future and retiring the original.

No experience with crossbows. I bought one for my wife that has sat in my garage for 10 years.

I really like the Remington Muzzle loader. I know several posters on here use them. I was recommended mine from a few guys on here. Functions like a standard muzzloader at the barrel, but uses a cut down 308 case to load primers. Very accurate and easy to mount a scope for longer shots.

I have a Barnett Jackal. I've got zero bad things to say about it, but I've never shot a different crossbow. I'm very comfortable at 50 yards. I haven't hunted with it much, but it's two for two.

As others have said, handle a few different crossbows.

Of you are interested, my 73 yr old dad has talked about selling his Horton Vision 175 (pretty sure thats the correct model #)
He is losing the fire for bow season with it never being cool in October.

Good for you keeping it what it should be…a good old fashioned front stuffer.

ETA: I still order a new Dixie Gun Works catalog every year or two. Nothing like thumbing through it!
