I think that one probably kamakaze'd into your metal building. It happens.

All the ones around here are doing well, but we've been feeding the hell out of them too.

Edit: I've seen doves in Michigan in the dead of winter that didn't fly south. I doubt it froze to death.

Mine was just a soft old city dove. I think the freeze got him

I had 10 dead white wings in my yard over 3 days of the freeze that would disagree with you. All appeared to have just fallen out of trees after freezing to death.

White Wings no le gusta clima Frio. It's actually why they were historically isolated to true south Texas

They pretty much run west Texas. I hardly see any mourning dove out here, and the occasional Eurasian.

The collared/eurasians are freaking everywhere now! No complaints because I love shooting and eating "bonus birds"

We had over 30 in front of our house today eating. Both morning and White wing.

We had some during the last big freeze. Based on where I found one of them, it must have died mid flight.

Had a finch this time around that my daughter tried to warm back to life (didn't work).

There were probably about 60 dead dove in one part of the elevator. All of my guys were kind of freaked out because the neighborhood dogs and cats had ate all of the heads off.

I stand corrected then. Now if you'll excuse me, I shall go admonish myself and go into.....mourning??

I mean you weren't wrong, y'all were just talking about two different species.

I had some that came into feed that had a layer of ice on the tips of their tail feathers. Much more and I am sure it would been hard for them to take flight to get to a food or water source.

Yep. Here in the Ozarks over the last week we have been down to -4 and -3 pure temp. Not wind chill. Haven't seen above freezing but a couple of times for over a week. Was 6 last night.
We still have mourning doves flying around and eating doing fine.
There is nary a white wing to be found up here summer or winter….cause for a reason.
This is over a week from our 10"+ snowfall last week. Very little melting.

Went to the pearsall area a few years ago to dove hunt. The guides told us after the 2021 winter storm the white wing numbers haven't been the same. They said they thought most of them died. I was skeptical and figured they'd just moved farther South. Maybe they were right.

Here is an interesting map on white wing migration/range.

We had a pair that built a nest behind the TV on the covered patio. Spooked one over the summer, had the outdoor ceiling fan on. Quite the feathery mess....not the brightest birds. Also had one kamikaze into the French Doors on wife's office facing the street. Had this little dust imprint of a dove on the window for a week or so.

Dove are probably the worst nest builders in the bird world. It's amazing how many actually make it to adulthood lol
