Have any of you ever done container gardening with old 55 gallon drums?

If so, did you cut it longways, top to bottom to make a trough? Did you cut it in half to just make it shorter?

What kind of soil mix did you put in?

What grew well?

Any hints, tips, lessons learned?

TIA

55 gallon drums will eventually rust, and if you cut them, you have an edge you either have to grind down or do something to it to avoid cutting yourself.

I've had good success with old cattle protein tubs. I've had some for over five years now, and they're still in great shape. Drill some holes in the bottom for drainage, and put about 2"-3" of broken up styrofoam in the bottom (keeps the weight down if you ever need to move them). Fill them with a good garden soil, and buy the best one your budget will allow. DO NOT USE POTTING SOIL. I've had good success with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, and spinach. You just have to remember that you can't overcrowd them. One tomato plant per tub.

Thanks

Sorry, I chose the wrong word. It should be barrel. I'll be using a plastic food-grade barrel.

Cattle lick protein tubs work great with drilled 3/4 inch holes about 1 1/2 inch from the bottom! I have also used corrugated plastic 36" pipe that was discarded cut to size usually 18-36 inches tall on top of landscape fabric.

Yes, plastic 55 gallon drums cut in half should work out great.

Lots of videos on YouTube and Facebook that show some great setups.

In that case, stand the barrel on end, and cut it in half. They're work great. Proceed with the rest of the directions above.
