OB Team,

I work in the equipment industry and things get stolen from time to time. Without getting to specific, our business was targeted at a couple of our locations over the course of 2 days (2/11-2/12). 5 Machines were stolen and GPS units removed.

One of the machines just so happens to have an old leftover GPS unit inside of it that is still pinging.

$50 to anyone in Kauffman County (GPS is pinging at a Scurry address) that can do a drive-by to see if there is a skid steer on this property. Looks to be a big open pasture judging off Google Maps on probably 5 acres.

I am over 3 hours away or I would be there in a heartbeat. Also, if anyone has a connection in Kaufmann Co law enforcement, that'd be a huge help and might help us short-cut the system.

These thieves are getting smarter and smarter.

Edit to add- it is nearby the intersection of 4074 and 4075 just to give a general location. Legally speaking, is there any problem with me sharing the coordinates to a large online forum? Ha.

I'm about 20 minutes away from there and can make a field trip of it with the family. Won't do much other than drive by and take pictures if I can see anything, but let me know if you want me to try and take a look!

Agreed. Looks to be a livestock barn on the property and the GPS is pinging around it so I bet it is in there or behind it.

There is a dirt road next to the property that could potentially allow access to snoop further and see behind the barn.

I was really hoping this was close to me. Kaufman county wasn't ringing a bell though. About 4.5 hour drive for me.

Hope you're able to get some resolution on this. Not sure when this went missing and how long its been in the current location. Keep in mind the property owner where its at may not know what's going on. I had a co worker have a side by side stolen that had an independent battery powered GPS device in an obscure location. The thieves dropped it off at a property that doesn't get much traffic. Cops told them this is a common tactic to see if there is some type of tracking device on it. Drop it off, let it sit for a week or two then pick it back up if its still there.

Yep, all fair points. Periodically we find machines in the middle of the woods waiting to see if we show up.

This one seems a bit different. We are in Central Texas. They found a GPS (I picked it up off the ground on the side of the road this morning), and now the machine is 200 miles away. Fortunately we had a backup GPS in the machine. Seems like they believe they found the GPS, or it is at least my hope.

Yes, you are correct though. The land owner may have no idea. Looking around on Google Maps, it seems like it isn't in the best part of town... Google Maps does show a gate though so I'd assume someone had access to the property.

Update***

Agfan2013 came in clutch and his client did a drive by. He got as close as he felt comfortable and could definitely see some equipment moving around but could not confirm anything. In other words, we don't quite have a smoking gun.

I am going to continue to monitor our GPS and meanwhile we are going to call the sheriff. I will update the OB with any other ongoings.

Big thanks to Agfan2013. Terrific guy to take some time out of his day to help a poor equipment guy out.

We had this problem for a long while, but now our GPS system runs through the OEM telematics. So no more boxes to cut off, hopefully yall can move that way soon too. Good luck getting it back, if you need to buy a used replacement for it, just let me know (s).

Appreciate that. What is interesting is the machine did have OEM telematics... That is what I found on the side of the road this morning.

Police have recovered the machine and are taking it to impound!

I think they had to do some creative police work to access the property. When we were getting off the phone they began banging on the doors to the house yelling "Police open up!"

Score one for the good guys. All in an honest days work.

To be clear... We still have 4 machines missing unfortunately. All GPS have been removed. I find it hard to believe we find these machines.

Glad to hear it was recovered by the cops. Should have probably known you have seen or heard of this trick, since you're in the equipment business.
