Anyone familiar with the Carta Valley area? I have a family member looking at some property near there and had a few questions.

1) I read some older threads about Anthrax being a potential issue in that part. From what I've read here and elsewhere, it can vary property to property. Has anyone dealt with it on a property they hunted or owned and what impacts did it have on the wildlife?

2) They're mainly interested in WT but turkey and Axis would be nice bonuses. How are those populations?

3) I'm sure it's slowed down or stopped currently, but is illegal traffic something to worry about?

If ever in Rocksprings they should stop by Priour-Varga Wool and Mohair and talk to Steve Haynes about that area.

My aunt and uncle had a place there for awhile, bought in in early 2000's and sold I believe right before Covid and more than tripled what they bought it for. The hunting was meh, not gunna kill trophies but you'll be able to kill turkey, hog, deer and axis. The illegals broke in several times but only took food, water and boots if left. Overall they enjoyed it a lot.

Our place is between RS and Carta Valley and we haven't had any issues with anthrax. Illegal traffic has come and gone over the years but lately hasn't been an issue and never was terrible in the 16 years we've been there. This did happen at our place to the previous owners though….

SAN ANTONIO -- An undocumented immigrant looking for something to eat in a stranger's kitchen was shot and killed by a pregnant woman in her Edwards County ranch home, border officials said.

Police believe Gonzalo Lopez Castaneda, 32, and two other immigrants, were looking for food in the woman's kitchen Tuesday when he was shot once in the chest with a hunting rifle.

Lopez had worked on an area ranch and was returning there after going to Mexico for Christmas, Edwards County Sheriff Don Letsinger said.

The ranch where he was killed is about 50 miles from the Texas-Mexico border.

The case will be turned over to the district attorney.

The sheriff and Mexican consular officials said the woman woke from a nap to find two men trying to cut through a window screen and a third, Lopez, standing in her kitchen after apparently kicking in the back door.

San Antonio Attorney J.A. Garcia, who represents the Mexican Consulate, said the two other immigrants told him they overhead Lopez and the woman seconds before the shooting.

"They could hear Lopez telling the woman they were hungry as she became hysterical," Garcia told the San Antonio Express-News for today's editions. "They heard the lone shot and both ran.

That is some of the best country in the western hill country in my opinion. Good family friends, the Shanklin family, have ranched right there off 2995 for 100+ years. Their ranches are immaculate. Not a cedar or mesquite on their places, just live oaks. Worked for Souli Shanklin, the Edwards County Judge, down there multiple summers in High School. His son, Souli Junior, is one of my best friends.

yep. Used to hunt off of 2995, Clayton Crenwelge owned the property, past the old gas plant. The plant was torn down in the early '90s. He had property on both sides of the road at this intersection. I just absolutely loved being out there. Late July filling feeders listening to the grasshoppers. The night sky with a million stars.
