How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hey Texags! I am going to have a son in law soon and I want to get him a nice 1911 for a present at the wedding. I want to get him a 1911. Any advice on what to get? Looking to spend $1500-$2000. Something that will hold value for him for a long time. What do you think? I was linking a Colt Government or Commander model in stainless. TIA!

Now that's how you Father-In-Law! He will be over the moon with any 1911 you give him.

I would get him a Dan Wesson.

I do really like Dan Wessons but I don't want him to have one before me!

Colt is always a good choice for a 1911.

In the sub $2k range its really hard to beat a Dan Wesson.

Easy solution.

Buy two Dan Wessons, of course.

I would 2nd the Dan Wesson suggestion of aglaska ….OR do your research and find a nice Series 70 MKVI or Series 80 Colt. Series 70 my preference.

ETA: Like this:
https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/pistols/colt-pistols---1911/colt-1911-government-model-mkiv-series-70-semi-auto-pistol-45acp.cfm?gun_id=103508399

Or This:
https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/pistols/colt-pistols---1911-series-70/colt-government-model-mkiv-series-70--made---1983--unfired-in-original-blue-box.cfm?gun_id=102744293

They also made the above in a more rare version chambered in 9mm….if you can find one in like new or thereabouts will run you at a little over your budget ( probably $2600 plus ) but are very fine shooting.

Series 70 MKIV's will only continue to increase in value.

I'm not a fan of the newer CZ Colts.

Guy gets a 1911 from his father in law. I got her insurance and cellphone bill from mine.

Matching pistols would send a great "we're family" message.

Plus, if it ever comes down to a duel, you will on equal terms.

I got gunshots over the head from mine… I never did really know if he missed on purpose, or was just too drunk to hit me.

I know a father and son who have nickel plated Colt 1911's with consecutive serial numbers. Pretty cool.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

A gun for a son-in-law? Sounds like a good trade to me.

Don't know your daughter or any of that, but I can already tell that the future son in law done out kicked his coverage.

Yeah, like all of us will be your "son in law".

Colt Commander in blue then have his initials put on trigerduard. initials are cheaper than you think and really met a gun apart.

Having a young daughter, I read your thread title as which should I use for the son in law. The scene from bad boys 2 immediately comes to mind also

Build him a platypus 2011

You can customize the serial number

It's a great race gun but not a fine jewelry gun

I was going to write the same thing: Dan Wesson.

Dan Wesson is probably the best 1911 for the price. colt kimber can be hit or miss lately.

But this is 2026 get him a 2011 like a platypus or CPO Staccato.

So I thought you were going to ask for caliber suggestions….

I'm at least 17 years from needing one.

Dan Wessons are cool - there's something classic about a Colt, though.
