Well the wedding rehearsal will be outdoors...
I probably should have sought the advice of the all knowing OB before tonight, but I have to say a few words this Wednesday for our son's. (And yes I know the date, I don't think the 23 yr olds did)
I would love to hear what direction y'all took when you were tasked with that ...

Mrs.B wants it to be funny but not embarrassing...
I've got a couple Scout stories or a memorable golf trip, or even his accomplishments on the track for the Maroon & White....Just looking for suggestions
I just know I will never bet against him...

I did this last year for my youngest daughter. I went with an intro with a couple of funny but not degrading memories. Then I gave my advice on how to have a successful marriage (I've been married for 42 years).

So the focal was the success stuff. Seemed to have been well taken by both families. Good luck!

Whole reason wife and I said no speeches at our wedding, from anyone.

In any event, congrats to the youngins, and good luck!

Just did it in January. Everyone appreciates short and genuine.

Mine was around 500 words.

I'm also on this path for the 9th. Will sit down and sketch something out this week.

Had to do it last October, was ready if her father said something. Fortunately he didn't and it was the kids and the grandparents who talked.

I did the same. Nobody wants to hear anyone give a ****ing speech at a wedding event.

ditto. nobody wants to hear about stupid "funny" stories that aren't to the 99% of people in attendance. Keep it short with some simple life advice and move the F on.

Also like to add that bestman/matron of honor/etc speeches are all cringe for the majority of times. They are long winded with stupid stories nobody cares about that are irrelevant and half the time they aren't speaking into the mic loud enough and you cant hear. It's an all around waste of time for everyone.

As others have said, keep it short and sincere. If there is some great memory you have that won't take 10+ minutes to explain to the crowd include that, but don't go into some long winded explanation of some long ago memory.

Also, write down some notes. It's OK and no one will care if you reference them when speaking. It will help keep you on track and not ramble off into the wilderness.

Thanks to everyone for the input, but special thanks to you. After reading your post I scraped a good but ridiculously long story about golf and found the theme in the original closing paragraph.
Brevity is the soul of whit... thanks

Also take into account the suggestion, writing down your speech. I did mine and reduced it to 3 bullet points.

And I practiced several times the day of. Builds confidence.

Glad I could help.

I did a rehearsal dinner speech for my oldest last fall and after several rough drafts did the short sincere story and got a lot of compliments from family and my kids.
