I'm doing contract work around Canyon City, Oregon, and I'm looking for anyone with tips for the area. Interested in river fishing, river rafting, panning for gold, and hiking. Google is no help for good tips or local guides. Hoping Texags knows things

I lived in the area for many years. There are millions of acres of public land out your backdoor! There are lots of creeks for fishing. The strawberry mountains have some really great scenery with good hiking trails.

The various forks of the John day river produce steelhead and bigger trout than the creeks.

You can get good burgers and steaks in your area. Affordable housing can be difficult to find. It's a small, rural farm/ ranch town two hours from the next biggest town. Many people can't handle the remote small town life for very long and don't stick around.

Congrats on getting to experience eastern Oregon!

eta: I don't of any fishing guides or places to gold pan, but that area was a huge gold mining district at one time. Check out the Chinese museum in John Day when you get time. It's quick and worth the visit.

Check out Lake Owyhee and Snively Hot Spring due west of Adrian. Spent a few nights in far Eastern Oregon on a big road trip one time. Super cool country over there.
