My spouse is getting the paperwork from their doctor for a handicap hang tag. I've looked at the Brazos County page regarding applying for the tag, and the information may be staring me right in the face, but I can't tell if they need to apply for it in person, or if it's something I can do for them. Does anyone know? Thanks a bunch.

I took my mom's paperwork in and competed the transaction myself. Weird thing about those is that they are issued per person. If a wife gets one in her name and the husband (even if he is disabled) drives himself somewhere and uses it without her in the auto and gets caught, he could be cited and legally needs to have his own. The issuing office just puts the first initial of the person on the hangtag.

And yet I see this often. The spouse using it to park more closely.

Had a student tell me they got two tickets in Stallings garage for parking with their dad's DV plate and they were whining about it, saying they should be able to do it if they are driving that car.

Good Lord.

Thanks so much. That will make things a little easier.

My mom's husband used to use her tag when she was nowhere near the car. I guess he thought his bad back justified it. Sheesh.

There is a form that you need to fill out. You can download it and print it from the DMV website if you want to do it ahead of your trip to the office. If not you can fill it out there. You just need the form and your prescription from your doctor. You can go through the drive through. You dont have to go inside.

When my wife broke her leg and arm at the same time, I was able to get it for her. This was last Nov.

Be forewarned, they only accept cash.

and if you utilize it on campus during an event where there are LEO's verifying - the person who the placard is for HAS to be in the car. Otherwise the the LEO can take it away.

At one time there was a huge issue of students using their grandma's hang tag to park in handicap spots. Thus the crackdown by University police.

I went to my nephews HS Graduation at Reed in 23, a month after a massive spinal surgery, they gave my wife a HC Placard for me, ours was the red temporary one that only lasted a few months, maybe 6 at most. I was shocked when we went to use it and park up front, the LEO asked for the tag, read my name then asked to see my ID. I was pleasantly surprised to see them so vigorously enforce the parking. I qualify, according to my neurosurgeon, for a permanent plate or tag due to my limitations but I can walk and move just fine, so I'll wait until which point I cannot, if that point ever comes. I won't feel right taking one of those spots when I know darn well I can walk fine.

Agreed.

After my first really big surgery, my surgeon said "I'll give you the paperwork to get a hang tag to park in handicap spaces while you recover."

My wife said "Nope. He is going to walk as much as he can stand it to keep scar tissue from building up and get strength back. We won't be using that."

When it was time to go grocery shopping, she would drive us to the store, park way out in the parking lot, and then get a cart for me to use to stand up straight and serve as a walker of sorts, and then have me follow her around the store. She meted out the tough love.

HR later contacted me to tell me "hey, you know you are considered disabled, right?" I told them I had been called a lot of things but not that.

Probably after each of the three big surgeries I had. For sure the 1st and 3rd surgeries. Could have used a tag for at least a month each time.

DV plates no longer give "de facto" Handicapped parking rights.

In Texas, as of January 1, 2022, you can't park in a handicap spot solely with a disabled veteran (DV) license plate; you also need either a disabled parking placard or a DV license plate that features the International Symbol of Access (ISA).

Best in the business. Was referred by 2 people I trust and a friend who is COS at a major Houston hospital chain. He did not disappoint. Whole staff at Methodist, from my surgeon the the custodians were top notch.

100% agree. We had a bad initial experience here in town with a popular doc at Texas Brain and Spine, Methodist was a complete 180 from our TB&S experience.

My husband used Dr Ibrahim ElNihum at BSW here (neurosurgeon) for his spinal surgery in 2023. We have been very pleased with the results.

The doctor that finally found the problem was Dr McKernan at BSW in College Station (Pain Management). My husband had a bulging disc, and then a cyst near his spinal cord that grew rapidly around nerves.
