Mr Dubi went to the ATT store by Kohl's on Tuesday to get cellular enabled on a new Apple Watch. An employee helped him, but also secretly added a $17/mo insurance plan to our account.

Fraud? Theft?

I am really mad that the employee felt that was an acceptable action. Probably on commission so the more people they cheat, the more money they pocket.

Did he look at the charges before he signed?

A lot of new products come with that insurance unless you opt out. They do at Verizon.

That is a serious allegation to make.

My husband did not ask for insurance to be added to our account; also he did not sign anything or "checkout". The employee did not mention that he was adding insurance to our account. We received an email that showed the bill was zero, BUT that does not show account changes such as insurance.

I bought the watch directly from Apple and already had Applecare.

That pretty well covers what happened.

On old trick at supermarkets was to lean a broom up against the counter. The cashier would then sell the inexpensive broom to every customer (pre scanner days). If caught they would claim it was just a mistake.

I always thought that this was just a myth, until I spent a summer sacking groceries.

Used to work for the company and I'm sorry this happened. I wasn't in a store but did transactions with the point-of-sale they use. It's an add-on… you don't typically opt out.

Call customer service and threaten to cancel if they don't refund you the insurance you didn't want. They'll do it. The agents at stores don't have as much power as the customer service reps, so save the trip and make the call. You're still early enough in your contract to take it all back (if the rules are the same as when I was there). Better yet, the sale will fall off that sales agent's commission since it's still soon.

Every company has some bad apples, and I do know some great people that worked (and still work) there with good morals and ethics.

Edit to add: I tell my family and friends to just do everything online if you can. You can do just about everything online these days and can make sure you say no to things like the insurance.

My husband called the number on the email and they were on the phone for a long time; then they hung up on him.

I think everyone at that AT&T store is dishonest. Last time the spiderpigs went and got new phones there, the salesperson tried to up-sell us all their monthly add-ons. We told her we wanted nothing extra, just the base plan. Only to get home and realize she had added the pay-extra-every-month-to-get-a-new-phone-sooner plan. We went back and talked to the same salesperson who basically said golly, I didn't realize you wouldn't want that, it's such a great deal. And, of course, they can't remove that crap at the store and you then need to deal with calling and arguing with a call-center person on the phone.

None of this surprises me about any of the big cell carriers.
