How often does it get cleaned up?
The Racoon Trail is in need of mowing. It is pretty rough right now.

It's been pretty rough for months now. Overgrown trails, construction barricades in random places, OOS mini bridges that have been in disrepair for years, etc. There's a pile of crumpled large diameter culvert pipe still just sitting in the creek near where that young lady died a few years ago. Ever since the sewer trunk line work started years back the park has been neglected.

The main trail was even backfilled with crushed concrete rather than dirt & stone despite Parks dept assuring folks that it would be returned to its original state. It's a terrible trail medium for bikers, joggers, & walkers….much less their dogs.

I know Bob Yancy engages on this board and hopefully he can push the right buttons downtown to get it cleaned up a bit as my own efforts have certainly not been enough. It's a beautiful park that deserves better care.

I would be happy to join a citizens park crew that helps with occasional clean up, but Racoon trail needs mowing with a brush jog.

I was unaware that someone passed back there.
I got goosebumps walking back there yesterday when I got to the tall grass. I had gone to far, and was committed to making my way through, just beyond the halfway point.

Also, I wish that a packer could be driven down the "grey trail," can't remember the specific name.

City officials are way too busy planning a midnight vote on a data center that will ruin nearby neighborhoods and raise our utility rates to worry about pesky park maintenance. Pretty parks don't fund pet projects.

My house backs up to lick creek and I agree the gravel is terrible and overall the trails can be managed much better. I'm sure funds are tight, but this is a potentially great asset for our community and should be treated as such.

We live fairly close to Lick Creek, used to bike there several times a week. We got busy in a different phase of life, kids stopped biking and parents aren't nearly as cool as we used to be. We went there the other day after a several year layoff and were really astonished at how poorly maintained the trails had become. Appreciate the OP and interest to improve the park's maintenance.

This one made me mad. Yes, let's cover a walking trail with material that's hard to walk on without rolling your ankle.

Funds will always be tight when you pay over market value for vacant mall properties and then have to pay a maintenance fee and also have no tax revenue coming in from that space.

You make it sound like that was a bad idea, or something

I think that's our best bet unless they plan to remove the crushed concrete & then bring in new material. A vibratory drum roller/compactor should help break up & compact that material although I can't say how good the result would be, only better than it currently is.

The tree killer????

(Ancient history. He pushed for two different groups of trees to be planted. On group on the bypass, one off Wellborn? (I think) one batch died because they didn't get watered. The other batch died because of getting too much. )

Never send a Rec and Parks prof to do a Forestry prof's job.

If you want a glimpse of what Pebble Creek Parkway would like when they open the street to the neighborhood to the south, look at W.D. Fitch. Their "mow job" looks like a really bad haircut and half of the trees/crepe myrtles are either needing attention or are dead.

With all of the taxes we pay, you'd think they'd do better. It may be time for a recall & a few heads to roll.

How did they think this surface was a good idea? It's bad for runners, walkers, and certainly the elderly. I suspect even the dogs complain about it.

Seasons of weathering on the backside of the main trail surface has (finally) reduced these boulders into smaller pieces but I suspect the City will repeat the mistake. The part of the trail just before and after the bridge is still a Martian landscape.

Can they not use the same material that's on the inner trail? It's compact, flat, weather resistant, and except for a few places here and there, good enough that can actually move along and simultaneously view nature instead of staring down two feet in front of your stride making sure you don't injure yourself.

The only upside to this horrible surface is that it keeps people away. Your chances of seeing wildlife are better I suppose.

We have an older mutt that refuses to go to Lick Creek likely due to those rocks hurting her feet. She will go anywhere else no complaints.

The trail that connects to pebble creek park is much worse after the rains we had a few months ago. All the finer dirt and rocks washed away leaving all bigger rocks. It's no longer a good running trail for sure.

I'm no fan of Lord C but, I think you are remembering the trees around the Wellborn/2818 errrrrr Harvey Mitchell Parkway intersection. I was pretty critical of those at the time because like you said - most of them died in the hot summer that followed due to not getting watered. But if you drive by there today, you have to admit it looks pretty good. I don't know if they replanted a bunch of trees or if they just came back, but it's a pretty thick little grove of trees there now....many years later.

Guessing this group is no longer active?

https://friendsoflickcreekpark.wordpress.com/about/aboutfolcp/

I go to Lick Creek at least once a week generally, and would be down to join a "clean up crew" but I also know the city does things at the Gary Halter Nature Center, and they may have a schedule for mowing, trail maintenance, etc.

I'll throw this out there too. As I mentioned, I back up to Lick Creek Park and there are daily four wheelers, side-by-side, and golf carts. Especially at night. I'm sure this doesn't help the quality of the trail.
