To tip or not to tip

I know this has been discussed everywhere, but curious on the local BCS thoughts.
For service in a restaurant I'm normally a 20-25% tipper.

I'm curious on peoples thoughts for tipping when going through a drive-thru, fast food joint, etc. In the days where we are now paying $15-20 for a basic sandwich, we have the option usually defaulted to 20% tip unless you find the small sad face button of 0% or the 5% and so on.

If they have a good attitude or somewhere local I frequent with reasonable prices I'll throw in a buck or two because I appreciate the product. But someone that just hands me a greasy bag through a window asking to fill out "a question or two" after scanning my card makes it sometimes feel like I'm waterboarding a kitten when I hit that 0% button.
What are Y'alls thoughts on this one? Waterboard the kitten or bump it up to an even $25 for a formerly "$5" sandwich?

My rule is that I tip 20% if I'm sitting down and someone is waiting on me, bringing me my food, refilling drinks, etc.

I do not tip for placing my order at a cashier and picking my food up myself at a window when they call my order number. I do not tip in the Layne's drive thru (or virtually any drive thru)

What ever happened to, the once usual, 15%?

Prices of the food are going up, shouldn't that take care of the tip price going up?

Also, I don't tip for the bare minimum of getting my food. Like above, If I am at the drive thru or counter, or concession stand, no tip.

If they need more at that point, they need to ask for a raise.

If I ask for delivery or have a waiter that waits on me, I tip 20% +/- depending on the service. Much less if they are really bad.

Blue Baker has a spot to tip on their screen, and tip jars for those that lay cash.

It's counter service. I'm not tipping.

In the event that I feel too healthy and decide to go to Shipley, I pay in cash and they have recently turned to asking me if I want my change after I pay.

Yes. I want my change. You didn't do anything to deserve a tip. Stop trying to outdo Freebirds for the largest collection of halfway-house-looking employees.

I will tip a carhop at Sonic if I stop in for a drink and don't used the drive-thru, usually during happy hour on the weekend.

In before someone bad at math tells us that tipping is just the restaurant owner forcing the customer to pay their staff so they don't have to.

Ok, snarkiness aside the above is correct. I tip roughly 20% for table service. I do tip about 10% for places like Freebird where they're walking me down the line and making the order custom. Drive through and carry out gets 0%.

I'll do 15-20% if getting a takeout lunch. It's not very much extra on top of a Jersey Mike's sub, or whatever.

Only tip on wait service, haircut, and special delivery. I have a rule of 10% minimum for meh or bad service, 20% for good service. 25% for excellent service. Tipping is a response to being happy with a service, not a requirement for service.

Fast Food, by its nature, deserves no tip. In my opinion, asking me to tip you at a counter for taking my order and handing it to me is ridiculous. A tip is to offset a lower wage and direct wait service, not just for the hell of it.

I don't expect a tip for dodging your bad driving or calming your bad attitude. I am always happy to help.
Walk softly and carry a big stick! Make sure the big stick makes big boom noises and flashy bright lights.

I'll never tip a fast food type place

If I'm not ordering sitting down and someone is not waiting on me .. I'm not leaving a tip

The practice of tip based off percentages is stupidest thing imaginable . I'm not tipping more because I ordered a more expensive plate or your food is overpriced.

But depending on the servers attitude / friendliness / service ect I'll tip anywhere from what Would equate to about 0-15% of the bill.

In my honest opinion a 20% tip unless you're at a high high end restaurant is laughable.

How about a place like C&Js? They walk you through the serving line and hand you your plate/to-go box at the end of the line. Limited service beyond that if you choose to eat at a table. I usually just add a dollar to the credit card receipt since there's a line there.

Bad service for me is zero tip. Why tip if the service is bad?

I don't tip if I have to wait in a line, pick out my food, take it to a table, and then go get my plastic dinnerware, drinks and refills.

At a nice sit down restaurant with great service, I normally tip 3x the tax,

Nope. I'm certain that the person handing me my food at the end of the line is not earning an hourly tipped wage ($2.13/hr in Texas), so I don't feel it's necessary to add a tip.

Nope
I'm ordering at the counter. I'm getting my own drinks/ refills and I'm getting my own condiments… no tip.

I get where you're coming from, but typically more $$$ on the bill means more people they had to serve.

What about on an online order? I sometimes wonder if my food is handled as well if I don't tip for say Walk-Ons pickup order.

I also tip based on service. My youngest son likes to tip if the service is good, and he usually has cash from grandmom so I let him do that. I also like for him to hand it to the server and say thank you.

At Sonic, I order online and will either round up or tip a dollar. It's just drinks 99% of the time.

Online/takeout orders are often handled by a server making tip wage so I usually tip.

Like many things in life, there is not a black and white answer except to use discernment based on your own temperament, outlook on life, generosity etc. and accept the consequences as they come. Rinse, repeat.

Depends on where I'm at and the level of service provided. If I'm at a chain, ordering a full meal, 15% of the check total for reasonable service, 20% if it's excellent. If I'm at a hole in the wall and getting a cup of coffee and a breakfast taco or two and the service is excellent (I never see the bottom of my coffee cup), tip is probably going to be around 100%.

Those are estimates. I tip based on what I think the service was worth.

Why would I tip a waiter/waitress a higher dollar amount if I ordered a 20 oz ribeye instead of a grilled chicken breast? Why should I tip them a lower dollar amount if I ordered a grilled chicken breast instead of a 20 oz ribeye? They did the exact same amount of work and provided the same level of service in either case.

If I eat and then pay later? That's a nice tip.

Pay for food and then eat it? No tip.

Tipping for fast food at drive thru? That's ridiculous.

I tip at sit down restaurants, and at a bar.

Outside of that, not so much.

I've waited tables in this town, and college kids didn't tip when I was a college kid waiting tables.

Here's what gets me. I understand that most places now days add up the tips for the day and then divide equally among all the wait staff. In other words, my tip to waiter X for a great job is not necessarily received by her/him. Is that really true?

It depends on how each restaurant operates, I had an assistant manager at a Subway tell me that she doesn't participate in the tip-share and when the restaurant is busy, the non-managers make more than she does, Her facial expressions and tone of voice showed me that she didn't like that and I suspect that she makes pennies more an hour than the other workers and a lot more responsibilities,

Yep, part of the credit card payment system just yesterday. The ones that you have to scroll through menus, select other, then drill down to the 0% will begin missing out on repeat business. I'll haggle for a car, not a sandwich.

Anyone out there who is working at Shipley's, subway, etc? I would say freebirds, but I stopped going there when they went to fake cheese and got rid of their grill . (I really miss freebirds)
Anyway, what are your thoughts & experiences. I want to support our local Aggies, but you'll be running into the same thing in a few years if not already and we all dislike being nickel and dimed to death.
