Unpopular opinion possible but city of CS has to bring back red light cameras…

Amount of people who run red lights is insane. And not just rolling thru quick yellow light. I mean red for 2-3 car lengths and vehicles blatantly blowing thru intersections.

IMO they really need to bring back red light cameras

I see accidents in CS literally everyday.
If you do not drive defensively you 100% will get run into by some idiot before too long.

I think we need more traffic patrol and red light cameras to be honest. Jusy way too many people don't know how to drive.
And it's so bad in CS.
In big cities like houston / Dallas yes people drive aggressive but they know how to handle a vehicle
Seems people in CS do not know laws of the road, don't care and don't know how to handle a vehicle.
It's pretty much like driving in a 3rd world country
No rules, so whatever you want.

Agree with your observation but the cameras are a non starter here after the kerfuffle last time.

I'd be down for extreme and draconian penalties though. One year license suspension, mandatory multiple defensive driving courses, some form of community service, etc.

I'm a firm no to red light cameras, though I do see more people running them egregiously these days.

That said, people in this town can't even function at a 4-way stop, so it's not like the driver quality was ever top notch anyway.

I am in favor of adding access road delineator posts further down the SW Parkway S exit off 6 to keep exiters from being able to cut over to Holleman. I avoid that entire exit and intersection going any direction when the students are in town. It's the wild west over there.

Graham can be similar but it seems most people down there have figured it out or they just keep driving down to Eagle if they can't make the cut.

You are welcome to opine all you want, but Texas law says red light cameras are not legal. But that would not necessary stop COCS from trying it again. When they were in operation they were quite effective at providing island junkets to staff and council members and providing unencumbered funds statewide. Once the state mandated the majority of funds collected go to them, there was little interest in continuing their use. It became obvious that they were never about safety and all about cash and favors. The local vendor had been convincing cities to shorten yellow light time to increase profits, which absolutely reduces safety, and ended up with multiple class action lawsuits.
So do what necessary to enforce the law, more traffic patrol, bigger penalties. But you also have to figure out if traffic enforcement is the biggest issue, I suspect it up there but there are likely other issues that need equivalent if not more resources to address. I know there are accidents every day, but also burglaries, robberies, other violent acts, and repercussions of other illegal activities such as drug sales and use. And ending up in a situation where police enforcement is a profit center typically makes things worse not better.
Unfettered enforcement by robots deployed by profit motivated companies are not the solution to this or most problems.

Deeper issues here:

1) Too many stoplights creating 4 way stops where there should be an unimpeded main road and 2 stop signs on the secondary road.

2) SHORT left turn arrows cycles, followed by solid red left arrows instead of flashing yellows.

3. Poorly timed lights on most if not all major roads.

And as for the OP, red light cameras are prohibited by state law since 2019.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Both posts are spot on. I'm not defending red light runners at all, but frustration mounts when traffic lights are poorly timed/not optimized.

It's a crazy world out there, prepare and act accordingly. Lots of red light running going on all over the world.

I saw a kid in a small truck run through a school bus stop with it's flashing red lights and a stop sign. If he was 5-10 seconds later, he would have hit a bunch of elementary kids.

This was on Ursuline (near the prison) around 4:30 pm.
This is the second time I've seen that on that road.
I'm getting a license plate next time. I may just run them off the road.

On a side note….we need more patrol around school zones!!

I pick my daughter up everyday at CSMS and a patrol motorcycle sits there 1-2x a week. He is constantly pulling people over. In the 20-25 minutes I'm there, he pulls over 2-4 people within that time period each day. He could easily make and surpass his quota each month if he sat there everyday

I thought state law forbid any new ones?

Like the ones still in Houston / DFW are grandfathered in?

Red light cameras are a no.

Have you called the non-emergency police number to report excessive violations at a particular intersection?
UmustBKidding

There are no active red light cameras in DFW or Houston. When the law passed it exempted existing contracts from being canceled. The only operational ones in the state are in Leon Valley who extended their contract until 2039 before he proposed legislation was introduced. I am sure they had no advance notice.

Horrible idea. Besides the obvious unconstitutionality, they simply don't work half the time/charge people in error

I'm curious as to which stoplights you think are unnecessary in this aspect.

Same here. I can't think of any red lights (yet) where they should be free traffic one way and stop signs to enter.

There is about be one at WJB and Coulter that I question but that's it.

Just hire a couple of fresh-faced cops.

Their entire job is to write tickets for running stoplights. All day, 40 hours a week.

That will eventually slow down the egregious light runners. And it would bring in more money than the failed Bitcoin mine.

If you notify the police they'll accompany the bus until they catch someone. Used to see this out on county roads regularly.

If only they had as much diligence as they did on 2818 when it was a "construction" zone.

I remember when the city said they bought this cutting edge system that would allow them to control traffic lights across the city and make gameday traffic a thing of the past. That was at least 10 years ago.

Traffic still sucks, and the traffic lights are timed like they were 25 years ago.

If folks weren't looking at their phone and sitting there until someone honks, then I wouldn't need to run the red light.

This kind of stuff is why I bought a dashcam.

I don't know if it's enough evidence to ticket someone, but it makes me feel better.

They are optimized. For tickets. I read an article once about how these companies modeled the revenue cities would receive based on the sensitivity / delay of lights changing to tickets issued. Rife for abuse. Nope nope nope.

I would like to see a dedicated police presence - writing tickets at every intersection where there has been an accident causing death or major injury (due to someone running a red light) over the last two years.

Also, I would like to see a penalty of a three month drivers license suspension, but allow the guilty party to drive motor cycles only during the suspension. :-)

I'm so confused, so do we now want CSPD to uphold the law and write traffic tickets for red light runners? When that starts happening, will the "CSPD has nothing better to do than to pick on citizens" crowd come out in full force?

I don't really care what that crowd yells about, For me, I have never been stopped or ticketed by a law enforcement person for following the law as strange as that sounds,

^ This! Along those lines, I only had a motorcycle while I was at TAMU 73 - 77. The police picked on me by writing me up with five speeding tickets over a twelve month period, just because I was speeding. It was unbelievable the correlation. :-)

Tango Charlie Tango. My post right above yours called for targeting intersections where there had been fatalities and injuries caused by red light runners.

Had a bad experience with red light cameras. They are not just. I was going thru an intersection and had the green light. Coming from the other direction, who had the yield light, was a knucklehead who blasted thru making a left turn in front of me. A cop was two cars behind him. I had to slam on my breaks to avoid hitting him. I thought for sure the cop would go after him. Anyway, a few days later I get a letter with a photo of me in the middle of the intersection, stopped, as the light turned red. Cost me frickin money because of another driver. This was in San Antonio.
