CSPD doesn't respond to vehicle wrecks anymore?

My wife was hit on Harvey Road by a man pulling out of Sam's/Associates Ave. about an hour ago. She called CSPD to report and they told her they don't respond to wrecks where there is no injury and both vehicles are drivable.

The man got out and told my wife he was sorry he didn't see her when he pulled out. How the heck are we going to prove that or prove he was at fault? CSPD sent her a link to self report.

WTH?

What if the guy was impaired? This seems like a horrible policy that basically leaves citizens in a bind with no "official" determination of fault.

because a cops says so is proof? the insurance company would do a better investigation

It's better than this guy getting home and deciding it's his word vs hers and deciding to change his story.

Agree. I will never drive a vehicle in this town again without a dash cam.

Bought a new car late last year and it came with the dash cam. Best car add-on ever.

I got rear-ended at a light on 2818 by a girl in one of her dad's nine ranch trucks. She got busy on her phone and said she let her foot off the brake. Pretty sure she hit the gas as well but no way to prove it.

Called CSPD. They could not have been less interested. "Nobody hurt? Vehicles driveable? Here's a link to our online version of a blue form."

How did it turn out? Any trouble getting her insurance to pay?

I know someone who was rear ended by someone obviously impaired. Blood shot eyes and wobbling. The guy also had no insurance and spoke very little English. Cops did show up but said they wouldn't give him a field sobriety test because he was probably nervous about being in an accident.

She initially asked me not to call insurance or police because she and her dad had fixed stuff before and could do it cheaper than a body shop without having to end up with a claim on their insurance.

She's a struggling college student blah blah blah.

I voiced my displeasure with her request and told her my insurance wants me to call police and to give the insurance a call as well.

My insurance said I could open a claim or call their insurer directly. I called her insurer and opened a claim. They had a nine vehicles on their policy. "Struggling college student." Uh-huh.

The insurer told me their preferred shop. I told them I would be going to Classic Collision in Bryan as it was my choice.

Doug and crew got me on the schedule and knocked it out quickly and did great work.

Other than the inconvenience of not having my truck for a few days and getting my son to carpool me, it was fine. I probably could have pushed for rental coverage but didn't have to have it with our setup at the time.

You don't need a police officer for a cut and dry accident, exchange car insurance info, get a picture of their license, the accident, and move on. Good photos will show who is at fault. Police report or not, the insurance still decides who is at fault, not the police officer. They only use his narrative to help their decision

Also for the love of everything, move the car off the roadway as soon as reasonably possible. That is the fender bender law that this town never seems to follow! Drives me nuts when you pass by a minor fender bender and they are just standing their on the phone backing up traffic! /rantover

Hmm, seems that coming to a vehicular accident offers an opportunity for public relations.

If you snag someone with a warrant or who is under the influence, well, that's just a bonus.
Walk softly and carry a big stick! Make sure the big stick makes big boom noises and flashy bright lights.

Guys, someone is always shaken up and best to get checked out by EMTs. Just to be on the safe side. ;-)

We had a lady run a stop sign at Barron and the feeder last year, and she just about spun my jeep around in the intersection she hit the front bumper so hard.. She had like 5 kids under 5 in the back seat along with her passenger. Got out screaming at me like I'd done something wrong. I just rolled up my windows, and called 911. Constable showed up first, and handled her, CSPD showed up, she got ticketed for disregarding the stop sign (CS has video on the intersection, and there were witnesses) ticketed for no child safety seats, etc. bent the frame in the jeep, but I drove it home. Her insurance didn't put up a fight, and paid for a rental for almost a month waiting on a frame from the manufacturer.

CSPD told me this around 2018, so I'm not sure this is a new policy.

They changed their time when I told them the kid (who had already decided to not pull over from Bush to University) was in 7th grade and had no license. Before the cops even got there, the kid took off running from Hullabaloo to Northgate.

Get ready for your insurance to pay for yours and their insurance for theirs, it's a joke. Happened to me while I was in undergrad.

CSPD is too Busy writing tickets to students for any kind of parking violation you can think of.
1. Parking on the grass ( partially ) at the apartment complex or home.
2. Parking in front of a dumpster briefly late at night.
3. Parking in a marked bicycle lane, etc, etc.

They basically patrol the big apartment complexes and other student housing 24/7 to find a reason to write a $90 parking ticket. This pays so much better for the city than responding to vehicle accidents.

The roll over on Texas Ave and Valley View (last week) probably had every police officer in CoCS there. Of course it was right across the street from the old police station.

FYI TxDOT/CoCS should change Valley View @ Texas to a right turn to Valley View only. South bound drivers turning left across three lanes of traffic (Texas). The left and center lanes are normally stalled (at rush hour and due to the poorly timed light) while the far right lane is open to normal (fast) traffic. This was a median design failure and made last week's accident inevitable. Finally drivers turning right on to Texas from Valley View want to turn across at least one lane of Traffic to go south on Texas or worse they want to turn across two lanes of traffic to turn on to 2018 and go east. These drivers should turn at Longmire GO THROUGH THE LIGHT and then continue east on 2018 (IMHO).

It's been their policy for almost 10 years. Many jurisdictions do this now and did before CSPD. Posters have said above why. Add to that that the average number of cops on the street at any given time hasn't had any major increase in the past 15 years while the population substantially jumped, and it's easy to justify.

There are some agencies in the country that have gone to a method of having non-sworn report takers respond to take a report for basic non-injury crashes. If you'd like something like that, hit up city council and be comfortable with that expense to tax payers. It's not a bad idea.

If it's the formal policy, the dispatch center isn't going to deviate from that regardless of current call load.

Every vehicle should have a dash cam these days. My car has, I think, 5 cameras. The car should be able to record like a dash cam but I still have cams front and back, and internal on one, on all of our vehicles.

I was in a hit and run when I was a student (probably 2013). Got absolutely drilled and the other vehicle was somehow able to drive away. A few folks stopped.

The cops showed up and asked what happened. I told them I was in a hit and run and the other vehicle fled the scene. They said sorry but there's nothing they can do and left. Didn't even talk to the witnesses. I was floored.

Been a fan of Bryan PD ever since I was rear ended by a student (on her phone of course). The nice young cop learned he was dating a friend of mine, and told me not to worry about any further accident details.

Update-

At fault party in the collision has cancelled their policy with Geico and will not return calls or emails from Geico, Geico is saying because their is no police report by an officer that they cannot accept our report to CSPD as proof of fault until they speak with their insured who is now refusing communication.

I knew this was going to happen.

Yet another crash at Texas Ave and Valley View this week. This intersection has became one of the most dangerous traffic location in CoCS.

Claim it on your insurance as "uninsured" or "underinsured" motorist and let your insurance deal with it. FYI best insurance option I have ever had.

I was headed south on wellborn today between Fitch and Capstone.

The line of traffic suddenly brakes hard. Thankfully everyone paid attention and nobody got rear-ended.

Some lady in a minivan made a u-turn past the median so she could turn around and go to 7-11.
