"When someone shows you who they are believe them"

My grandfather used to always say that. It appears the person charged in the homicide had a substantial criminal past with over 2 dozen arrests, most for them for family violence. Looks to the naked eye like this guy was a timebomb waiting to blow. Why this guy wasn't rotting somewhere is a shame and a sad commentary on our society.

Here is just a sampling of what his record looks like.

The male victim was the son of Buddy Winn, long time Brazos County Tax Collector.

Ezekiel Barajas is a perfect example of why the death penalty exists.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I know that's why I redacted most of the 80+ page report.

I looked him up in the Harris County court records, and it says he had five cases (one for evading arrest, two for burglary of a vehicle, one for theft between $50 and $500, and one for aggravated assault against a family member). He also had a trespassing case from Brazos County.

This one really hurts and I cannot stop thinking about since I hear about it Saturday Night.

Jerry is an Aggie and went to Bryan High.

I only met Nancy a couple times when she worked for the A&M System a few years back. Jerry (I assume his wife too) is one of those real-life superheroes that you never hear about. He is an Aggie but more importantly is someone who actually lived the core values.

Jerry was the former executive director of NAMI Brazos Valley along with being a drug and alcohol rehab counselor. Saying he was a mental health + drug & alcohol counselor doesn't really do him justice. Jerry was selfless and in the trenches. He did everything from helping families deal with other family members who are addicts and/or also have severe mental health issues to helping individuals.

I remember siting in a presentation given by Jerry and participants were starting to have a discussion (not quite an argument) with each other with one side saying mental health issues cause drug use and the other saying drug use fried the brain causing mental health issues.

He put a stop to it really quickly and having both sides come to agreement and understanding. It was really cool to see that live. Of course, his version is much better than mine. He basically said it doesn't matter. If you have mental health issues you need to work on them not matter the level of severity; whether you need more coaching than therapy or full-blown in-residence treatment.

But he said you cannot accurately diagnose or treat someone who is not sober. So you have to get the sobriety under control especially if you are going to have someone on medication. So quit worrying about what came first …

Jerry also helped train law enforcement deal with people having metal health and drug issues. He would respond to people in crisis, waist deep in depravity, in locations surrounded by pure evil and get people the proper facility.

A few days ago, I saw where the CS city council was looking at the idea of a psychiatric hospital. Saturday night I sat down to write an Email to Bob Yancy saying I have no idea what the actual need by numbers are. But I was going to introduce him to Jerry Winn because he will know for sure and actually deals with this kind of thing. That's when I saw the KBTX story about his and Nancy's murder.

I know there is so much more. I would love to hear from those positively affected by Jerry and Nancy.

Sorry if I am rambling, this one is tough to write.

This doesn't really even begin to describe the kind of people they were. He really was a superhero.

very sad story.
The guy seems to be criminally insane and unfortunately he killed 2 people because of it.

Criminally insane has some pretty narrow requirements and nothing I have seen would seem to indicate he is. Violent sociopath seems a better description - and likely more accurately describes the likelihood he would respond to pharmacological or cognitive therapy.

As long as he never leaves his jail cell then I would be ok with that.

In terms of sentencing, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a plea deal for life with parole eligibility after thirty years instead of life without parole or the death penalty, since Mike Epperson and Jalen Bloom pled guilty last year to double homicides in Brazos County, and that's what their sentences were. Either way, I can't see him getting less than a life sentence if he's convicted.
