My wife and I were thinking of spending a few nights in downtown over new years away from the kids. Where is the best place to spend NYE in downtown? I see lots of different parties, but a lot of them are pricey and I don't know if they are worth the cost of admission.

Maybe think about the Domain. Great restaurants and hotels there. Have dinner/drinks, walk around with your lady so she can see the lights and decorations, more drinks, hit the room for fireworks.

Do you live in austin or is this a vacation? If you live here, NYE is the same bars, bands, and experiences, only with 100x more a-holes. Costs are 4x normal and places are full so you are locked in to one place rather then hitting multiple spots.

Then yeah, for NYE, pick a musician or party that sounds most appealing, pay for some level above general admission if possible and have a nice dinner and then plan to hang at the one place. It should still be a good time, just much more crowded than a typical weekend. If you are doing 2 nights the 30th and or 1st will be much more normal and give you a chance to walk/explore more.

Yep. Absolutely do not do GA if you want to enjoy yourself.

Most places prefer tables of ~4 to 6 as well

If you're drunk NYE doing cheap coke off your laundry card, I have just the place for you. Austin's hottest club is DOUUUCHE. Inspired by true events, this former CVS, which became a Chase Bank and then became a CVS again, has a familiar yet troubling feel, like when Larry King would play himself in a movie. This place has everything: desk sets, key fobs, kale chips, Roman J. Israel, Esquire. Plus, you can play everyone's favorite party game, The Stranger. Do you know that Billy Joel song "The Stranger?" Well, it's when you sit on Billy Joel's hand until it's numb, and then you rub yourself with it. So you can pretend it's Bruce Springsteen's hand.

This reminds me of the incoherent, irrelevant blog comments you used to see with old SEO backlink building.

Vacationing in Austin? Go spend NYE at S. Lamar and Ben White, aka Adlerville, with the homeless junkies.

I spent one NYE at Peche, a cocktail bar on 4th Street. We had a great time. It was a convivial atmosphere, great drinks, great servers, and they passed out Champagne at midnight. That was about 4 years ago so I hope it hasn't changed. Reservations would likely help you get a table. We were lucky that a table cleared right before we got there.
