Texas hasn't had a good nutty billionaire since Howard Hughes. If Musk doesn't want to deal with Alameda county type politicians, he'll avoid Travis county. The smart play would be to buy a neighboring county in toto, incorporate his own city, and make his own rules.

The auto dealership lobby.

Like liquor stores they have arcane laws forcing consumers to pay higher prices. They spend a lot of money to keep it that way.

As for Tesla they should bring some good jobs this way. Welcome news

And a whole lot of other states. As a rep at one of their stores told me "All I can sell you is a hat or a t-shirt".

They do make it super easy to buy online though, it's been interesting to see the laws have little effect on their business.
