Using new DNA techniques.

Linked to a serial killer that committed suicide in 1999.

Kind of never thought this day would come. Rest in peace, girls. You will never be forgotten. I was friends with Eliza, and she was a sweetheart. I am so relieved for the families, and frankly the whole city of Austin. That night was one of the darkest times in this city.

This begs the question how a know serial rapist and killer's DNA wasn't linked sooner. As this is a developing story, hopefully we'll have all the details filled in soon.

Sounds like one of his family members submitted DNA through something like 23andMe and an investigative genealogist found a partial hit, so they exhumed his remains in 2018 and were able to tie him as a perfect match to several rapes and murders across the country. It could be that the Austin PD tried once again recently to run DNA through CODIS (as they likely had done several times unsuccessfully over the years) and got a match this time.

we will see. There is a press conference on Monday.

I bet it's because until recently, they didn't have a full DNA profile for the YSM. Like not until weeks ago (speculating on that). They had such limited DNA to work with that the first testing probably used up almost all of it and only got a partial profile. Every time DNA is tested, it's consumed. They probably waited until technology progressed and they were damn certain they could get a full profile with the only spec of DNA they had left to work with.

I heard very recent advancement in technology allowed for a proper analysis and match given very limited sample on a spent cartridge casing.

Well said. At the time, I was a nine-year-old living in Allendale, this was a very real, sad, and unforgetable experience. I couldn't tell you how many nights my family and I would hit up that yogurt shop, prior to the murders. Very sad and thank God for some closure.

I don't know the timing of when dna was being processed, but sure seems weird to have a Netflix special on it after decades of nothing and then magically it's solved weeks later?

Been solved like 3 times now. How can incompetent prosecutors get away with convicting innocent people of the murder so many times. Sad that they wanted the crimes solved so badly that they convicted multiple people who weren't ever involved.
