I'll be in dallas this weekend looking at engagement rings. What are some good places to go look?

I got mine at the Diamond Doctor, and there is another ring store just up the street by the Galleria, something Brothers.

I got mine from this guy, and he was awesome. Takes you through the process (I knew less than nothing about diamonds) and was the cheapest of anyone I looked at. When I got the ring it was flawless.

Diamond Doctor - very knowledgeable and you can't beat the prices.

Go to the big box stores and look at different styles. Then call my friend:

Gem Reflections
2050 World Trade Center
Suite #7517 ~ P.O. Box 420174
Dallas, Texas 75342
Phone: 214.748.1588

Wholesaler... we got a really good deal b/c of our friendship but even if you marked up the stone by 25%, it would still be cheaper than prices listed on Diamond Doctor's website.

Always go wholesale. Buy the diamond have it set. Save money

You are wasting time if you are looking somewhere other than the Diamond Doctor.

Best in town, hands down. I tried for a month to beat them and NO ONE could match the quality for the price the Diamond Doctor gave me.

also if you do buy online make sure you have it sent to an address outside of the state in which the online store is located and you can save several hundred bucks in taxes

If you want a really cheap engagement ring, hit me up via PM. We'll go find you a stone and take it to my jeweler to have him set it. Probably 1-300% cheaper than retail.

Or you could do what my Buddy did. Shop all weekend for engagement rings, but when decision time comes buy a bass boat instead. Didn't go over too well, but I think he actually saved money in the long run.

Totally second this guy. He is fantastic. He works out of a home in Richardson and will take you step by step through "diamond 101" I bought my wife's ring from him. The quality of his diamonds is superb. I also have sold a diamond to him and he gave me a very good deal.

I went with Scott Polk (twice) who runs the store below. We designed my first ring which I named the "boomerang" since it came back to me. On the second, I brought in photos of one that I liked and he duplicated it for me (and took my first ring back and credited the full amount towards the second). He is also very reasonable on prices.

He is in the World Trade Center, so you would need to give him a call in advance to schedule an appointment. Former aggie linebacker and great guy who still supports A&M. You can't go to a function in Dallas without him being a sponsor. Give him a call at 214-747-3558.

Just curious, anyone have any experience with online jewelers like bluenile.com or whiteflash.com (which is in houston)? I know the Diamond Dr prolly isn't the cheapest with all of the advertising he has to pay for, prolly just the most well known "wholesaler".

fwag-

I actually bought my diamond from whiteflash.com. I had it sent to my sister in Louisana (saved tax since out of state). Then took the diamond to Diamond Doctor and had it set in one of thier rings. If you have any questions let me know and I'll try and answer them for you.

I can't say enough about Excel Diamonds. It's a family owned place in NY and the guys are top notch. They will help you through every step, and where a lot of places will take advantage of you, they will actually talk you down.

When I was looking for just a stone (planning to save on the taxes and free shipping), Barry actually pointed me to a less expensive diamond than the one I was originally interested in because it was a better diamond overall. I ended up deciding a custom setting from them and before Barry let me order, he pointed out that they were just about to drop the price on it because of lower material costs, which saved me more money. Additional, due to time constraints on my end, they rushed the order even before they had the payment (you receive a discount on the price if you wire the money), and I received the ring with diamond set *very* quickly.

Excel Diamonds will not appraise their own work because they feel it is a conflict of interests and they encourage you to go to a company whose only job is appraisals. I took my ring to a certified appraiser and they valued it at almost 50% more than I payed for it.

In short, great company, great people, can't recommend them enough, and I will definitely be going back to them and recommending them to anyone I know (or don't know for that matter).

fwag - I purchased my wife's at www.uniondiamond.com . They have one of, if not the highest Consumer Reports satisfaction ratings and cheaper prices than Blue Nile. I was very happpy and so was the wife with the ring.

I got married in '93 and we bought our rings from Helzburg in late '92. Every January and July since, my wife has taken our rings in for checkups on their lifetime warranty and they have made several repairs. They've added gold, repaired diamonds, resized, you name it. The fact that they are still in business is a plus.

I bought mine through Union Diamond as well and we are very pleased with it. But after this weekend there is another option that I would have to recommend as well. Contact Chuck at AggieJeweler.com and see what he can do for you as well.

go online. no sales tax, higher volume, and limited overhead expenses mean lower cost to you.

i got my wife's at http://www.jamesallen.com. found their prices were generally lower than bluenile and they have actual magnified images of the diamonds which i liked.

I bought my wife's diamonds from Blue Nile. Do your homework, such as the Price Scope website. Learn as much as you can and then purchased based on the objective data.

After I bought the ring I took it to a reputable appraiser in Dallas who had no idea what I paid. The appraised value was almost double what I paid.

Also when you take it to another appraiser, never tell them what you paid for it, I had one guy ask me what I paid before he apprasied it and told him to tell me what it is worth first then I'll tell you.

Blue Nile was great for me as well. I paid far below appraised value for the ring.

Furthermore, my wife changed her mind on the wedding band after she saw it. I thought it'd be a hassle dealing with an on-line group, but they took the return without any problems or hassles. I highly recommend bluenile.com when you decide to make your purchase.

These people all make you think you ripped them off, it's like buying a car. I shopped most of the brick & mortar places, including some posted on here. I bought it online. I went to an appraiser after I purchased it because frankly I can't tell a difference between good and great, everything checked out.
