Tell AT&T no

AT&T is digging up lawns and using heavy machinery in residential yards in Lake Highlands to install their fiber optic cables. They asked me and I told them no, that AT&T can contact me to discuss compensation and liability for damages before they have permission. They tried moving a huge multi-ton machine into my neighbors yard on top of and next to the retaining wall I recently paid to restore.

They have not given notice and do not have a plan to fix any damages they may cause. If you have pipes break, retaining walls, foundation, or other issues caused by their machinery you will have to litigate to try to get reimbursement. That's on top of digging trenches and removing 18"x18" squares of grass that will cost money to remediate.

The company should have been open about the process and informed people of when they would be working on their property. Instead they have tried to show up and perform work when people aren't home. Tell them no and complain to the city council and city code compliance.

They are currently doing the same thing in my neighborhood in Frisco. The contractor has access to the easement and if the city has approved the project there isn't much you can do about it. A guy in my hood contacted the city and was told to let them know if they don't repair everything when completed.

In other news, they gave me a 15% price increase on my mobile bill without informing us. Zero notice. I'm changing by October.

One of the most hated companies on my hate list.

On this topic, at least the city will make an attempt to clean up the mess and repair any damage they've done. City of Dallas had to tear up our front yard along the curb to do some line maintenance and they replanted the grass they tore up.

The big red flag to me is nobody told the homeowners anything. We got a marketing notice that AT&T fiber was coming, but they did not indicate they would potentially be in yards or digging on people's property. This seems to be on purpose so that homeowners would not have time to understand their rights or to organize anything to stop this. The stupid thing is we have all of our utilities through the alley. I have AT&T internet and it's through the alleyway. AT&T told me the reason they didn't do this for fiber was because it is more difficult due to the other existing lines. So they are doing the cheapest, quickest thing to the detriment of the homeowners.

I believe Corby from The Ticket lives over there... They cracked a water supply pipe in his front yard, ignored it, and it burst a few days/a week later.

How are they getting into your lawn without any kind of easement?

Telling them no won't do anything, get the contractors info and their insurance. Most of the time they just screw up a few feet of your yard, and while frustrating they have the permits to do so and you can't do much.

Their fiber is pretty great though, you'll be a gigilionaire!

They are claiming they have a permit to install on an easement 7' from the curb. Although I've seen them further up in neighbors yards early this morning. I'm still trying to talk with someone at the city. It may be right that my property line ends shortly before the sidewalk. I would have like to have been informed previously if they are digging up my yard.

Good news though - fiber optic internet is super fast. So you'll have that going for you, which is nice.

That is true. I would be able to quickly search for contractors in a couple of years to rebuild the retaining wall they were trying to back machinery on top of.

Good advice here. They have so far been unable to produce this for either of the two contractor groups. I'd be surprised if they didn't have insurance, but it's odd the crew out here doesn't have that readily available. That and the lack of prior documentation bother me.

Derail here...I hate AT&T so bad that I called up Patriot Mobile which I heard about on the radio. Technically you can't go AT&T to Patriot and use AT&T lines so I was on T-Mobile for two days before they sent me a new AT&T sim card to put into my phone. So I pay $86 for my wife and me a month to use AT&T service, but my money goes to people that don't hate me (I'm white and Christian).

I can just about guarantee the ATT told the city that they maintain various types of insurance and require it of subs too. The city may have a COI(certificate of insurance). Take pictures of the damage and the equipment with the subs info on it and start with the city if you get push back.

Deal with them. The difference with fiber is well I don't honestly know, nothing comes close to the down and up speed. Considering we've gone to a wfh culture it is worth more than you can imagine

I've had AT&T fiber for years. Fast, reliable, and cheap.

What's weird to me is that we had AT&T fiber come through the last few months, and the absolutely put it in the alley because that's where all the other utilities are.

Had them come through our neighborhood in Rockwall in March. They went down our alleyway as well.

lol

come dig up my yard. I'd love to have fiber again.

I had it twice before going back to 2006 - Verizon FIOS did some of the first installs where I lived. It was amazing.

Moved to East Dallas (not far from the L streets actually but a newer neighborhood that had fiber) and had AT&T fiber there until 2019. Moved back to Irving/VR area and have terrible service now. Can't get fiber.

So the conclusion - AT&T has agreed to use the sidewalk to drill into, so they won't be on yards in our neighborhood. We won't have to worry about potential damage to retaining walls or sprinkler systems.

Working for the fire department, I can tell you these guys hit a lot of gas lines. Keep an eye out when they're in your area.

In my old hood, we had two different companies come through and install fiber in the easement in the front yards. There isn't much you can do to stop them, but the advice on documenting the damage and making sure you have contact information is good. They are good about coming back through and fixing busted sprinklers, water lines, dead grass. It's not good business to leave a bunch of pissed off customers with destroyed yards.

Ummm.. sprinkler lines go under the sidewalks. AT&T goes under sidewalks, driveways, etc in addition to yards all the time to run fiber. This is no concession by them, FYI. But, if it makes you feel better - for some reason - then, great!

How do they drill into the sidewalk to place cable?

Odd to me they aren't digging in the alleys, that's what they did in our neighborhood and just about everyone else's according to this thread.

Great, so they won't be digging up my grass and they won't be rolling multi-ton machinery up on top of my retaining walls. I'm not sure what made you think taking the time to randomly be condescending and rude to another Aggie was a good idea, but I hope that works out for you.
Red Rover

My understanding is they would break up a sidewalk square, bore into the ground to set the box, and then redo the square afterwards. Now they've decided that's more money than they want to spend, so they will only do that with 1 or 2 boxes. The location of the other boxes will be designed to work around a few of the remaining yards on the block.

I'm not sure what part of my post was "condescending and rude". I stated that believing no damage would occur to sprinkler lines due to working through sidewalks was misplaced relief. I tried to be supportive, indicating my disdain for AT&T by acknowledging this is no big concession from them. I then provided my opinion that if the agreement you reached with AT&T made you feel better (for whatever reason), then great!

Your post, however, was definitely condescending. Unlike you, however, I am not as easily offended by a stranger on the internet.

Anyway… hopefully, any sprinkler lines damaged during your sidewalk install get replaced expediently.

Some of you are amazing. Want the best of everything but don't want to see how the sausage is made. AT&T laying fiber is good for that neighborhood. They have approval from the municipality and do not need individual homeowner approval. The process is not always pretty, and there will be some eggs broken, but overall you won't notice a thing in 9 months, except a cheaper monthly internet bill now that you have a valid competitor to the cable company. Even if you don't use AT&T, the cable company knows they are there and you can negotiate a better deal.

All of the people you see working are contractors. They bore and place the conduit, pull the fiber, splice the fiber, and place the handholes (little boxes in the ground). These are done in waves and may leave holes, conduit protruding, etc for days or weeks at a time. If you order service, they will place and bury a "drop" from the handhold to your house. They will have to bury the drop which means slicing a shallow trench in your grass.

Overall a small price to pay for most homeowners. Again, I acknowledge that there are issues that arise in the construction of this fiber network.

Overall, provides more options, speed, and competition to the market.
