Any comment and price estimate for central AC compressor that is dead...

Cost of new compressor vs new AC unit recommendation.

New AC whole unit is basically compressor housed in condensor coil with fan?

Thanks

Bit of conundrum...one of AC unit is out.

So, Change the compressor and recharge the freon: cost estimate $500 for compressor and $1200-2000 for Freon alone...($130 per pound of old HCFC freon.) Total cost out of pocket $3200.

Change to whole new AC system Seer 14 system with new refrigerant...$12,000-14,000
Seer 16..cost bit more for 4 ton unit...

Above price is price with so called home warranty...which is likely sham insurance...already paid $100 service call.

Any recommendation? or other options?

My recommendation is shop around. 12-13k for a 4 ton 14 seer is high imo. I'm looking at a 17 seer 4 ton American standard for right at 11k.

The freon issue is only going to get worse for you in the future as r22 supplies get lower and lower.

I just replaced the outside unit in our house in Flower Mound. The cost was $6500. I'll probably replace the unit in the attic later this year. It's not cheap. We replaced a Trane XL they was installed in 2003. That thing ran for ever.

We replaced two units, blower and wrapped/repaired ducts throughout the house. 22k total including tax.

5 ton and 3 ton multi speed units. 16 seer units.

I just got a similar quote right at $11k for the exact same system from American Air Masters

One other thing I just thought about, if you're looking at replacing ask them what manufacturer unit they sell. Some (I want to say either Trane or lennox in particular) have really long lead times on units right now. You'll want to find out how long to get the unit before you hand over any money.

I think the tax credit for new ACs was just reinstated, but I think it only goes up to $500.
