I'm looking for a good Aggie orthopedic doctor in the Plano area. I have pretty worn down knees and I know a knee replacement is within 10 years. I've had some orthopedic doctors want to do it now but I think they just want the surgery money. I need a doctor I can trust with this type of decision. Thus, looking for a good Aggie one.

I don't know any Aggie ortho MDs and I'm more familiar with the Dallas docs. However my reccomendation would be Brett Raynor. He's a younger guy and conservative in his treatment approach. The other guy that comes to mind is William "bill" robertson. He's a no BS, straight shooter. I'm an ortho PT in Dallas and these guys are my usual go tos for conservative/sports medicine. Happy to talk with you about different docs/options if needed.

Are these COVID policies still in effect everywhere? Has medicine still not moved on? Still a year or more behind the rest of us?

Not sure about visitors but when I went I didn't have a mask and wasn't told anything.

Hope that is the case. After the impact covid had on us as a family financially for what turned out to be predictable (highest risk = old or fat) I am highly sensitive to doctor groups that still cling to covid as an "issue".

I would call to be sure but I went twice in January and didn't wear a mask either time. I went during work so was by myself but I wouldn't have brought a visitor anyway.

Frisco but depending on where in Plano you live this could be close. Office is at legacy/Warren but surgery if needed is at the Star Medical Center off Warren/NDT.

Michael J Champine also at Texas Ortho. Good Texas Aggie and he replaced both my knees in the same surgery.

Make sure you have your surgery at their Walnut Hill surgery center and not a hospital. Huge difference in infection statistics

I'm with Baylor and the staff is still in masks but it is optional for patients. I believe this is across the board, but I've heard of a few docs making it optional for all.

Champine and pascal are both good options as well. I don't know ghattas as I don't work with anyone up that way.

why does it have to be an Aggie?

If I'm picking a random stranger to trust, I'd feel more confident with an Aggie. I've had an orthopedic doctor in the past that recommended me to go through knee replacement surgery ASAP. He just wanted surgery money..

FWIW, I went to a stem cell clinic in Mexico that I thoroughly vetted. It was a great experience. I had stem-cell and PRP injections in both shoulders. My shoulders are not perfect but it did help a lot.

Top orthos in DFW told me my only option was shoulder replacement.

The same clinic has gotten good results with knees also. I have a friend who is going down there for knee injections to put off knee replacement surgery for at least 5 years when he is slated to retire from his active job.

It has a terrible name. Dream Body Clinic. www.dreambody.clinic If only I had gotten a dream body as part of the deal.

It is located in Nuevo Vallarta. I flew in one day, stayed at a reasonbly priced Occidential all-inclusive resort less than a block away, and flew back out the next day.

The guy who runs the clinic is named Josh. He'll gladly spend time talking with you via WhatsApp. You can get contact info for patients to chat with if you want.

Dr Brian Gladnick at Carroll clinic. Young guy and you will like him. Uses mako robotics with stryker joints. You should asked about "press fit procedure ". State of the art and i can run on my new knee. Dr champine at tex orthopedic is good but very old schol and uses johnson and Johnson joints.

However if you want an unbiased opinion, go to Dr Schienberg at TX orthopedics at Prsby. He doesn't do knee replacements. Great guy and will give you great advice.

Feel free to PM me.

I believe it was a good experience. But everything you listed sounds suspect.

That is fine. Believe what you want. I just know it worked for me and I've put off having two shoulder replacement surgeries for a few years for a total cost of less than $7,000. As they say, your mileage may vary.

The literature on stem cell and PRP is extremely mixed. Glad you had a good experience. There is a guy in town that will put PRP in anyone for a cash price so no need to go to Mexico, I believe his office is in Southlake. How old are you and why do you think you need knee replacement? If you are in your 40's there are a few new cartilage replacement procedures that may be a good alternative.

It's my understanding that you can get more stem cells in Mexico than in the US because the FDA does not allow them to be multipled in a lab like they do in Mexico. PRP is basically the same thing in either country to my understanding.

I did not delve into the research in great detail because I was willing to risk ~$3k total to have one shoulder done in order to avoid shoulder replacement surgery. I got a good result and went several months later and got the other one done. I got a good result a second time.

I think it is hard for orthos to avoid the incentives. They would lose $ if they encouraged people to go get 50M stem cells and as a result get well enough to avoid the knife.

FWIW, I have it on good authority that the clinic I've gone to has treated a number of American orthos on the condition that they keep it quiet.

Like I said I am glad you had a good experience. If the results were definitely better the insurance companies would insist it be used instead of surgery.

They would save tens of thousands of dollars per case.

Interesting point. What about the orthopedic surgery lobby that is probably pushing in the other direction?

Our healthcare system is screwed up in so many ways. I don't believe what's best for the patient is a significant factor and wish I had not had to go to Mexico to get treated. But that's a conversation for another day.
