In getting her Learner's Permit, our daughter was told by the Rockwall DPS office that her DL could be applied for no sooner than 6 months. Anyone else have experience going out of town to find a DPS that can turn it around faster? Thanks Ags!

Yes, we went to Bonham to do it in June. You just have to start searching on the website to make an appointment. It is not a user friendly system but just keep looking around within a 90 minute drive and you can find openings sooner.

Same story for passports…we ended up going to Sherman which wasn't bad since we were in Prosper.
Just find a location and book the appointment…doesn't need to be your hometown.

I think what they meant is you have to have your learner's permit for six months before you can get a license. My friend's kid messed up and didn't get his permit until the summer. When he turned 16 in October, he couldn't get his license because he had not had his learner's permit for six months.

As soon as my kid got her permit, I scheduled an appointment for a license. I think you can schedule at least six months out.

Thanks to all. We drove an hour to Athens but had no wait to get her permit. And yes. State requires minimum 6 months of permit before license so our daughter will turn 17 by then!

Grew up in cleburne. Any time I needed a new DL, always came back, whether I was living in fort worth or garland. Always availability and you're in and out in minutes.

Back before appointments the wait at the big garland facility was 4.5 hours. Drove the hour to cleburne, was in and out of DPS in 15 minutes, got a quick lunch with my parents, and was back to garland 3 hours after I left. Saved an hour and a half and got a free lunch, all by just driving south west.

My youngest daughter (youngest of 2) turned 16 last week. Got her permit the day she turned 15. And her DL the day she turned 16.

Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!

Yes, the 6 month wait between permit and license. As others have recommended, go ahead and get an appointment online for her license. You can do it approximately 6 months out. We had an appointment this past Tuesday for my son at the Plano DPS office. We were in and out in 15 mins with his license.

We did the parent taught drivers education. He did all course work online and did the driving hours with me. However, we did pay a 3rd party to perform the driving test instead of the DPS driving test. Best $150 I have ever spent.
