Apologies if this isn't the right place to ask..

Moved to Texas from CO a few months ago and need to get a Texas Drivers License in order to get homestead exemption and taxes figured out. I know that I should've been more proactive and now it's biting me in the ass.

All DPS/DMV locations in the greater Dallas/FW area don't show appointments for a drivers license until May at the earliest.

Has anyone had luck walking in? Or is my best bet to fly to Houston where they have same day appointments available online and fly back? Is that even allowed? Hard to tell work I need to take the day off to sit an DPS location to only potentially get an appointment

My procrastinating ass thanks you in advance.

There is a mega center in Garland and Fort Worth, show up at 7-730am and get on the wait list. Pick the one closer to your work and you should still be able to work a half day at minimum. Seems like your boss might have a bit of common sense about your issue.

There's a limited number of same day appointment slots that open up for booking at 0700 each weekday. Log on at 0655 and keep refreshing to try to grab one.
I've been trying to get my third kid his learners permit. Unbelievable how broken the system is.

Have you looked at Waxahachie? They only had about a two week wait last time I checked.

Regardless of where you go make sure you have ALL your paperwork ready. I think there is quite a bit required when coming from out of state. Nothing will suck worse than finally getting in and not having something only to come back and do our all over again.

I went to the one in McKinney in Octoberish last year, I had an appointment but they would ask as you walked in, there was maybe 4-5 other people there or that came in while I was there and most did not have an appointment, so walking in shouldn't be a problem. There's a form to fill out you can do that ahead of time. I was literally in and out in 5 minutes, but I was just renewing not transferring.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Makes me feel a little better about the situation.

As of now I managed to snag an appointment in March so we should be set, but I still will try to wake up before it goes live and get an earlier appointment.

Boss is fine with whatever, but the PE Firm I'm on a consulting project with is less than understanding haha.

I've re-read the documentation requirements about 5x but still feel like I'll miss something!

LOL... My appointment is tomorrow in Ft Worth. I have pulled my SS card, passport and birth certificate just to make sure I have enough. Don't want to waste a trip. The paragraph describing required documentation is lousy.

I booked today (license expires in July) in McKinney. First available was March 30th.

I didn't think you needed a Texas drivers license since it is just filling out and filing a form (usually fine when you close on the purchase of your house) and can use it SS# instead of DL#. Maybe I'm wrong. There is a form at the link below you may want to check out.
