You never want to be the one posting these stories, but well, here it is…

My buddy and someone many of you know needs some positive vibes, prayers, and financial help. Chris Penn, owner of Good Records in Dallas, fell earlier this week and is facing a tough rode ahead. Chris is a father of 3 amazing boys and loving husband who graduated from A&M in '93.

He was a Moses Hall RAB, bonfire pot, student government rep, fixture of the Northgate 7-11/EZ Mart, and manager of Marooned Records on Northgate before moving to Dallas to manage Tripping Daisy and later Polyphonic Spree. Chris is a great human, and his family could use whatever support you can send either spiritually or financially. Heck, just order a t-shirt or some cool vinyl from Good Records and that would probably make him the happiest right now.

Check out the links below for more info, and please spread the news to those that want to help make a difference. Much appreciated…

If you are buddies with a Charley Crockett and Alice Cooper, you are doing something right.

And if you are supporting a family and raising 3 kids while running your own record store you are doing a lot of things right.

Boosting this to the top. Chris is an amazing person who has honestly done so much for the music scene in D/FW, Texas, and beyond. I was absolutely gutted when I found out.

He is responsible for probably one of the coolest things I have ever done, make some vinyl records. Back in 2012 Know Your Enemy (who knows Chris) messaged me and asked if I wanted to press some vinyl for the upcoming Record Store Day. If you aren't familiar with it, Record Store Day is an annual celebration of Independent Record Stores and Music. Just about every major artist and label puts out special releases, exclusive printings, rereleases, etc, at indie record stores all across the country. Chris and Good Records are founding members and put on the block party to end all block parties every year. Tons food, drinks, music, and fun all day long. I still don't know how he manages to book some of the big names that he gets. I have very selfish volunteered for probably 10 plus years now because I always end up getting to listen to great music and drink lots of free beer.

Anyways we met up at what was then A&R Records (bought by Josey back in 2015) and got to work. They were shorthanded and needed people to run the record press machines for the custom vinyl pressings for the new Preteen Zenith album. They set me up on a rickety old ass ladder in the back of the shop with about 10 cups of various different colored vinyl chips. I got to combine them in the hopper however I wanted which then got melted into a thick puck and pressed into the vinyl record. Its why they needed so many people because no two records were the same and they needed at least one person to run each of the 6 or so presses. I gotta say, I made some pretty badass color combos that day. I ended up getting to take an actual vinyl record that I personally made home with me that day and it hangs in a frame in my office.

Chris is such a wonderful and generous person who has supported so many people. Kids looking to buy their first record, artists just starting out, music weirdos looking for their own community, and even a few dumb old farts like myself. I think it's an understatement to say he is a pillar of the community. So if you can spare a couple of bucks or as the OP mentioned buy a record or two, please do.

I mean seriously, you know you want this shirt.

Thank you for the post and links. I was in there picking up the new Charley Crockett probably a week before this happened. Absolutely horrible situation for such a good dude

I didn't know him but always heard him mentioned on the Ticket. Sounds like an amazing husband, father, brother and Aggie.

Dang. Tragic news.

Had some run-ins with him many years ago and remember him always being a super nice guy.

Basically, A&M's stadium is like the anti-Longhorn Network, a place everyone wants to be, but not everyone fits.

So sorry to all of you who held him close in your heart. I had not met him, but knew who he was and his impact on music in Dallas. Had no idea he was an Aggie until this thread. Will definitely be getting a shirt.
