Just learned yesterday I need to replace my complete system which is almost 20 years old. From reading on here, it sounds like variable speed is recommended for the comfort aspect even though the additional costs likely are not recouped from energy savings alone.

Hopeful for some feedback on brand, pricing, and reputable companies in Dallas (Lake Highlands) area.
The house is 1802 SF and current unit is 3.5 tons.

First quote was from a smaller shop that the owner lives on my street.
Good:
- American Standard Silver 14, 3.5 ton -- $11,797
Better:
- American Standard Silver 15, 3.5 ton -- $12,702
Best:
- American Standard Gold 17 Variable Speed, 4 ton -- $16,829

I have another company coming out tomorrow to provide an estimate and looking for another 1 or 2.

(214) 729-6555 DT Air did a full replacement, new returns, dampness, 10 year labor warranty, 20 year parts on a carrier 24 seer. Was about 15000, but that was in 2021 I think.

Are they replacing the ductwork? I would recommend it.

The pricing does not seem terrible to me. Paid around that for a 4 ton fully variable Lennox in 2020 with new ductwork in a similar type house.

Had to do a new 3 ton heat pump in 2022 in a rental and was told that their costs had gone up 30%.

You do not need a variable speed system to be comfortable. Don't pay a big premium for it. Single-speed systems are just fine and the most reliable.

It's anecdotal but I've know multiple people who have variable speed systems crap out (usually motherboard) multiple times. The replacement parts seem to be far more expensive and take longer to receive. I have 3 units that will need to be replaced in the next 2-3 years and i have no intention of going to variable speed.
