I downloaded the app a couple of weeks ago and got an invite to join a few days ago. Took my first ride Thursday evening for dinner.
Pretty cool at first. Took 2 minutes from request to arrival. Unlocked car and 3 of us got in. My buddy and I are big dudes. I'm 6'2", he's 6'4". The Jaguar, while roomy for 90% of everyone was tight getting in and out…but overall comfortable inside.
The car drives with authority. We were surprised at its acceleration and its willingness to jump out in traffic. The big problem was our arrival. Trying to get to a restaurant on Lemmon in rush hour was a challenge. I was curious about how this was going to work out as I knew that getting to this particular restaurant would present an unusual entry.
At first the Waymo attacked it with insight and I was impressed. But then suddenly it turned down the alley of the restaurant, stops half way up the block and says that we have arrived. Well, not at all. A button arrives on the screen asking if it is not suitable. I pressed no. It moves about 2', stops and says get the hell out. No…so I call rider support. They answer promptly. The support person sees immediately where we are trying to go. Meanwhile jackass coming up the alley blocks us in. Waymo takes off and I flip off the jackass proving that even if you're not driving you're still prone to getting angry.
Car does an impressive job of moving back around. Unfortunately, as we round the block there are cones set up in our lane. Waymo drives right up to the cones but as it tries to merge back over, not one driver is allowing a Waymo to merge over. Funny how that happens. Meanwhile cars behind us couldn't see the cones and started blaring their horns, lol. Nothing we could do, hahaha. It felt like we were never going to get out of this spot so we bailed out. After we're done with dinner we walked out and I half way expected the Waymo to still be stuck behind the cones.
The price for the Waymo was a few dollars less than the best uber price…and of course there is no tip. I was super impressed at first but goodness gracious, the arrival was bad.
